The board has been pretty quiet lately so I figured a good fishing report was needed, even if it is a Michigan one. I took a trip this past Friday to the Rock with my boat, first time on my own. I'd been out there twice previously on charters out of Marquette with Daybreak - John does a fantastic job, he's who you want if you're going to hire someone for Stannard Rock. We headed out well before sunrise into a leftover swell from the previous day. It's a 45 mile run so it took close to 2 hours to get there but when we did the sun peeked above the horizon and the wind gods smiled at us. It was calm, with just enough wind and current to set up some nice drifts across the structure. We used light spinning gear, 3 oz jigs, and cut bait. We tried casting spoons shallow early without any action so we stuck with the jigs for the rest of the day. There is a ton of structure out there and the trick is finding the spots that hold fish, if you don't see good numbers of fish on the graph you move on until you do. Once you find them the action can be fast and furious, with three of us we had numerous doubles and quite a few triples. I have no idea how many trout we caught but would guess it was over 50 with at least that many more lost after hooking up. We took a dozen eating size fish home for the grill and one big one at 25 lbs that will probably end up on a buddy's wall. It would have been released but after 15 minutes of trying to revive it, without so much as a tail shake, it went into the cooler. If the Rock isn't on your list of places to get to it should be, it's a very special place.

Does anybody on here keep their boat at the boat club? What is the bridge clearance on the way there? Any problems with water level in the river?

I'd put it on CL before you head over with your cell phone for a contact. Let them know it's in Algoma and available for showing between now and Tuesday (other than during fishing hours of course ).

I just put mine on Craigslist last Friday and it sold right away. It's now up in the UP near Houghton, the guy drove 4 hours each way to get it. I've always had good luck selling stuff on CL. You might want to give it a try.

I'll second the recommendation on the Willis knot. I've been using leadcore with mono for salmon and walleyes for years and have never had one fail. I don't use Yellowbirds but can tell you an Offshore is good for about 6 colors, anything more and I put it on a Walleye board with the weight slid all the way forward.

Wednesday I had to take the detour basically coming from Tower Drive in Green Bay to Algoma. The road is blocked off at Cty T in New Franken to Cty P right now. The detour will make you turn left off of 54 and go down about 2 miles to K. Take a right on K and stay on it for 15 minutes or so and it will take you right back into 54. To be perfectly honest I don't even know if I lost any time on K. Its such a straight shot compared the winding 54 and you don't have to slow down through Luxemburg and Casco. It was really no inconvenience. I was thinking the same thing when I took Hwy K 2 weeks ago. I checked the time when leaving the launch and again when I got home. It might have even been a couple of minutes faster.

I'm going to be driving right past their shop tomorrow when I get off the Badger. I see a tackle purchase in my near future.

Thanks for the link and pictures. I'll have to find a couple... because the hundreds of spoons I already have just aren't enough. The stars aligned and it looks like I'm going to make it over for the evening tomorrow (Friday). Hopefully the harbor is open again or else we might have to launch at Kewaunee.

Sounds like you had a good day. I wish I could get out but it ain't happening until sometime next week. Any chance you could post a picture of a pearl Yeck? I keep seeing it mentioned but have no idea what it looks like. Thanks.

Rather than taking a right off Hwy 54/57 and taking Hwy 54 toward Algoma in the town of Scott, continue going north on 54/57 a few miles to county hwy K. Take a right on K and take it all the way through back to Hwy 54 in Rio Creek (which is between Casco and Algoma). Take a left on Hwy 54 to get to Algoma. It adds about 7-10 minutes to the trip this way, and there are a couple small burgs to go through. But overall county hwy K is a nice road. I took this route Friday and it was a good road all the way. The couple of small towns don't slow you up any more than the ones on 54.

We got 2 rainbows, one salmon, and a shaker. There were quite a few groups at the cleaning station that did better than us though. We started in 100' and worked out to 210' before turning around and finding some fish in about 125'. I think the bite was better yet inside of us, should have stayed shallow I guess. No real color pattern for us but all were caught on spoons. Good luck!!

Great idea! We should have one further north. I just checked mine last night and they expire next month.

Yes, I live just southwest of Green Bay in Freedom. I already have a boat for the smaller stuff. I'm looking at replacing my 25 footer with something a little bigger, just barely trailerable. The rig I'm getting close on is popular with the saltwater guys so I guess if Lake Michigan goes to heck there'll still be a market for it.
