Both if you can do it. The US Coast Guard has a tower network around Lake Michigan, and at least they should be able to hear a 5 watt handheld on Ch 16 anywhere on the lake. Keep it charged and ready for the ditch bag. Hard to beat 25 watts, with a good 6db gain antenna. Height=radio range. Check the power output and SWR with a meter. Take time to make a good solder connection of the PL-259 connector, with special care that no strands of the coax outer braid short-out the center conductor.

Teach a man to fish, and he'll have to buy a rod, line, hook, sinkers, boat, fishing license, and bait.
Each time he buys something, more tax is generated, more workers are hired to make and restock the shelves, more truckers are needed to deliver the raw and finished goods, more gas is needed for the manufacturing, delivering of the products, more electricity is needed to cook the fish and light the factories.
More taxes are generated by each activity.
More money is circulated through the system.
GDP grows, debt shrinks, lives are made better.
ALL from teaching a man to fish.
Now that is what I call 'Free Market GROWTH"! ;D

Slower weekend for us too. Fish seemed scattered. Had a good evening trip with Hoogie, Throbbing Rod, & Champ on the Fat Cat. Few fish but lots of fun.

Looks like we have a south blow coming on Thursday. Should not last long, but might mess with the current and water temps. Looks like things should lay down for the long weekend. Keep an eye on the forecast and be safe. www.captainks.net/weather.html

Check with the guys at Marine General in Duluth. They will have the latest info, and carry everything. Rapala, Bombers long A, Thundersticks, and Rebel fastracks work well up there. Flasher/fly can be a waste of time.

I fished out of Algoma on Sat & Sun mornings solo. Surface temp was 57 inside of 100 fow, 64 out deeper. Fish are scattered, and cold water down deep. Probe had temps in the mid to high 40s down 80-100'. Pearl Yek spoon took couple fish, pearl flashers/aqua fly a couple. Silver/green #5 J Plug took one. Lots of north to south current, so down speed was much different than surface speed. Some browns were caught in shallow south of town.

Struggled with the warm water. Had 70 on top, 69 all the way down. Just could not seem to get the fish to go this weekend. Hoping for a little wind to bring in some cooler water and turn the salmon back on.

The 26th Annual Shanty Days Festival is this weekend in Algoma. The fishing contest runs Thursday-Sunday AM. Contact Kevin Naze wildtimes@wizunwired.net. for all info. Fun for all. Not a big $ tourney, lots of doorprizes, kids division. Lots of in town activities too. Parade, bands, etc. check out www.algoma.org.

From past years, I have lost many one pound balls and dipseys. Of course they all have my name on them, so please give'm back if they are in your bucket. ;-))

I have a line on a 25' Sea Ray Sundancer cuddy, 5.7 Chev Mercuiser Alpha, mechanic owned that just had $1k in parts put into engine rebuild. Sleeps 4, Simrad AP14 autopilot, on trailer for $5000 in Algoma. PM me and I'll put you in touch with the owner. He upgraded to a 28' twin engine.

That must be the reason that the "Algoma Gut Boy" has rod holders on his bicycle trailer! I'll bet he's trolling the breakwalls between hauling salmon carcasses. ;D ;D ;D

I've heard of many 20 pound salmon on the radio this year. I have yet to see one on a good scale. Hundreds of salmon in the mid-teens, but I'll bet that a true 20 pound fish will win a lot of money next week!

Still lots of Salmon and Steelhead inside of 200' FOW from Sturgeon Bay to Kewaunee. Salmon are 8-15 pounds, steelhead 4-8 pounds. Spoons, especially glow on downriggers 50-100 down, leadcore and copper. Time critical. 3:30-6am and 6pm until dark are by far the best times to be on the water. Find a speed and direction that works and stick to it. Have a blast, be safe, and keep some ice on the fish with this warm weather. SPF 50 a good idea, and keep hydrated.
