I fish Algoma and have all the equipment....My son lives in Chicago so to satisify the early fishing urge, I'm going to pull my boat down, rent a slip at Winthrop harbor and fish for a week, while staying in Mundelein....I'm reading these reports of limit catches in that area already...I was going to go the first week in May...Question--should I go earlier weather permiting, and what additional equipment should I buy??? thanx for the help JP

I have twin 115 honda's...I like the security of two motors, as well as the ability to troll (4 strokes) with either or both (in a lot of wind)..Plenty of power to get there and back...I had to replace the waterpump impellers once in 7 years, but no other maintanence..Once in a while a fish gets between them, but luckily none lost...my buddy has an io and seems to be fixing it a lot.... The only time my fish tasted salty was when I didn't dry them off with paper towel BEFORE SMOKING ... I'M CONVINCED THAT WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OUT OF THE BRINE AND LET THEM DRY, THE WATER FROM THE BRINE EVAPORATES LEAVING THE SALT BEHIND ON THE FISH? ?.... JP

I also have a Brinkman....I adapted a propane gas hotplate to the lower chamber and put cherry blocks (from a tree in the yard) into a castiron fry pan...I brine 4 filets in a large bowl at one time...water to cover with enough salt to float an egg, 1/2 pkg brown sugar, 1/2 bottle soy sauce...(The 4 filets just fit in the upper chamber (unless they're honkers))..then into the fridge for 3-4 days!!! The smoker gets to 200 degrees.. I smoke from 6-8 hours..even if they are in too long they are good (perhaps a little grainy) My daughter in Madison steals 7 per year--one for each home badger game The people at their tailgate parties want me to come down so they can worship me!! PS I dry them off with paper towel before the smoking...no salty flavor...JP PPs I usually have to use 2 cherry blocks (about 4-5 inches thick and about 6 ins. wide) turning them over when they stop smoking
