I got out for my first trip of the year from 5-10 last night with nothing to show for it. We fished 70-100' and marked lots of fish. The amount of bait we marked was more than I've seen in years too. I had 3 releases on a deep rigger with a green/orange PK but that was the total of our action for the night. It was a fairly calm night but the fog was thick. For those of you without radar, SLOW DOWN!! I had a small boat coming directly at me while he was running in. I don't think he heard my horn because he didn't turn off until he could see me, which was only about 150' away. The main purpose of the trip was just a shakedown for the boat since the next trip is well offshore on Superior, so I guess we at least got that done. But a salmon on the grill tonight sure would have been nice.

Thanks for the info. I've never hunted ducks but am amazed by the guys I see out on Green Bay and LBDN in layout boats. You probably won't ever see me in one, they're a little small for my taste.

How do you hunt them, layout boats or some other way? It looks like the wind was decent today, hopefully the wind gods will smile at you when you're ready to go again.

It's up and running today. Maybe just technical difficulties??

Sounds like fun! Eventually I'll get out there, it is just hard to fit it in during my season in Kewaunee. Let me know when you're ready to go. I owe you and it wouldn't take much convincing to get me to go back up there.

With the calm winds in the forecast it was just to much to resist, so we made the 4 hour drive north and took a trip out to the Rock on Friday 8/25. The seas were calm for the run out at 5:30 AM and stayed that way all day, other than a little chop that was running near shore on the ride back.
We started out on a shallow hump, drifting across it with two of us jigging and two casting spoons. We caught fish both ways but the spoons were doing a little better until the sun got up and the fish dropped down, then it was pretty much all jigging for the rest of the day with a few sight fished on spoons.
We landed a dozen or so fish on that spot then decided to move on. The next spot we stopped at was a fairly steep break dropping from about 75' down to 120'+. We marked fish on the flat 75' area and on the break, all of which were cooperative. We stayed on this spot for most of the rest of the day and caught fish steady with more doubles than I could count and quite a few triples too. We never quite pulled off all 4 of us fighting fish at the same time but did have all four lines out of the water at the same time because of fish several times.
For the last hour or so we checked a couple of small, deeper humps that have been good to us in the past. They were covered with fish but they turned out to be small ones so we called it a day about 3:30 PM and headed in.
The size of the fish on this trip was much better than the last one we took on July 4th. The only small fish we caught were on the humps in the last hour. We caught a lot of fish with many in the 10-20 lb range and I got a new personal best at 25 lbs 10 ounces. White 3 ounce jigs with white tails and a chunk of brined sucker was the bait of choice for the day. There were about a half a dozen other boats out there, 2 of which decided to troll circles around us and then jig on our drift line when they saw us catching fish. It's a big place but I can understand moving in on hot fish and they gave us plenty of room, so hopefully they had as good of day as we did.
If you ever get the chance to fish the Rock, jump at it. It's a very cool place to fish and the fishing is everything that you've heard it is!

That makes sense. My friend heard about it third or fourth hand and I figured somebody got the story wrong along the way. Now if this wind would just quit blowing I could get the new boat out for a shakedown cruise and hopefully find a fish or two.

A buddy just called me and said he heard that there was some pretty good coho action off Algoma right now. Is there any truth to that or would we have to head to Port to find some?

Fly Rod

I don't know the first thing about fly rods but can tell you that I have a light 6.5 foot rod that I put down on a downrigger sometimes. It's a riot when you hook up with an angry king on that rod.

For 2017 the DNR is keeping the stocking levels for Chinook and coho the same as 2016, not reducing them like they originally proposed. They are also making a small increase in the amount of steelhead stocked and cutting the amount of lake trout and brown trout stocked by more than half. Hopefully our fishing will continue as it has been and maybe even get better. Attached is a link to the DNR press release: dnr.wi.gov/news/releases/article/print.asp?id=4092

Thanks Cody. We did the charter with John during the KD that I talked to you about and had a great time but there's nothing better than being out there in your own boat. This trip was very memorable being that it was the first on my own. I see quite a few trips out there for next year now that I've got the right boat and enough experience to feel comfortable. I'd like another trip this year but I don't think it's likely with the winds we get this late in the year.

I think Big Bay is the closest but it's still over 30 miles to the near side of the reef. I don't know if you can launch a 32' boat there but I'm planning to try it for my 25 footer next time out. I drove up there last year and it looked like a pretty decent ramp.

It's not a place you want to go with a small boat, Superior can be brutal and you are a long ways from shore. We had a calm to 1 foot forecast and still plowed through rough seas for the last 10 miles of the ride in. Stannard Rock is the main reason I went to a bigger boat with twin engines this year, I didn't want to make that run in my 25' Trophy.
