Pfm, Your comments are very unfair. I know a lot of great charter captains. Many of them will go out of their way to help out a fellow fisherman with info on the bite and when they have a breakdown on the water. Most of the guys that only fish this water once or twice a year do not realize how dangerous it can be in the fog. They also have no idea how far the long copper and lead lines are behind the boards pulling them. I think a lot of the fishermen think they are trolling for walleyes and if they get a bite they have to do a 180 to get back on "the spot" and that leads to them tangling their own spread while cutting off someone else's.

This has been a very interesting read. I grew up in Algoma and was fortunate enough to work on some very good charter boats in the late 70s and early 80s. Oh yes there was the same problem back then. Every one fished lakers and hoped to pick up a few bows on their trips. But wherever the charters were fishing, they always had pocket fisherman next to them and behind them. As stated, it is much worse the the long lines used today. The weekend warriors have to remember that there are fish all over this fishery and just because your next to a charter boat doesn't mean you can catch squat. Even if they told you how to set up.....fishing day in and day out, the charter captains have a feel that I can't explain.....but they are damn good at what they do. Give everyone some space out there....there is plenty of room. The guy on this board for years have given me some great tips and finally, I purchase a boat this year and I'm rigging my rods this week for hopefully a weekend trip. My goal is to be a daylite fisherman between 8-6 weather permitting. To find a spot where my wife and I can run a 6 line spread, enjoy the weather, the view, and if blessed maybe catch a fish or two. My wife has never reeled in a trout or salmon and this will be my gift to her when she can do that. And I think I can do it...(-;. For you charter captains.....make a great living at what you do...for the warriors...enjoy everything out there....catching the fish is the bonus...and remember, your can't compete for what you can't see and for damn sure you can't make a fish bite.
Just my .02
I'll let you know how I do on my first trip out.

I knows my status says new member , and that is because I left the site for a few years for the very reasons I am seeing in this post. When I first came here years ago , just starting in fishing the big lake, this site was awesome. Many anglers sharing and helping people and there was a great sense of comardity. But some how that all changed and this site seems to be not a place for anglers sharing info or reports , but more of a place for airing grievances or getting in online pissing matches. I have met many great people from this site over the years, some of which have left never to come back. To me that is a loss of a great resource to all of us on this board. ALL of us have had crappy experiences on the water , but do we really need to fight about them using a computer or phone as our medium of choice? Let's make this board what it was not a place to piss and moan about things we can't control.

And finally, if you think it's bad where you are- go to Sturgeon Bay LOL, it was interesting last week to say the least.. Theres a lot of give and take no matter charter boat or not.. There also is a lot of people out there that flat out dont have a clue.. A little courtesy goes a long ways.

Algoma, a drinking town with a fishing problem. Sounds like we have a bitching forum with a fishing problem.

In my post I referenced an issue with both a small boat and a charter boat so there wasn't any bias. I will agree that not every charter boat is this way but a fair number think that their activities are more important than mine.
I think what we all need to remember is that we're out there to have fun and get away from it all. Whether we are doing it for a living or doing it for sport makes no difference in how we should treat each other.
Keep an eye out ahead and to the side and do what you can to steer clear of each other. None of us (sport of charter) likes to lose gear or fishing time because of another boat. Also, there are going to be times when we come close to each other because we can't read each other's mind and we each veer to try and avoid and end up making things worse. When that happens, how about a wave and sorry rather than a bad attitude and anger???
I love being out on the lake and enjoy watching other boats catching fish not just myself and will help people when they are struggling. There's enough fish to go around and enough lake to go around. Just trying to get a message out to those who can't see it that way. They're the same ones that pass me on the highway just to hit the brakes to take the next exit and cause me to slow down to avoid them.
Enjoy the fishing, Keith

I try to get as far away as possible from other boats. Fishing in a cluster of boats is neither fun nor relaxing. If you see everyone going left, go right. Drive until you are well past any boats and set up.

Drive until you are well past any boats and set up. hit the nail right on the head there !!! when i start getting within a mile of anther boat i start getting a little antsy , with the water clarity the way it is out there now you'll get alot more fish if your away from the rest of the pack/boats. measure out 100' in your yard some time to look how far it is from your boat to the bottom, its not all the far so i dont understand why someone would want to be packed in with a bunch of other boats where the fish are probably all spooked and off feeding mode

LOL Cody...funny you mention the amount of spoons/baits a fish see's...when we turned on the radar during the tourney, I counted 127 boats in 2 mile range one night and thought man if the average boat is running 9 lines that is 1143 spoons in the water in a 2 mile area..WOW no wonder they are so picky LOL
