And all those people that didn't catch anything all week long won't be going back anytime soon, no matter what the report. Well then you CLEARLY don't know our area and how fast it erupts when people hear about good fishing. I could just share nothing, Matt, would that be better? I'm not sorry that I don't post results publicly, and for that matter, the lack of boaters etiquette and knowledge of right of way- aren't people I want fishing near me anyway. Never seen it worse than this years' K/D. Unbelievable.

Champ, Interesting thread/discussion
I am one of those small boaters that tries to mind his own way and stay out of the way of the bigger boats, occasionally we end in the same spot for what ever reason- I assume its because we find something on the electronics that we like and want to work. I NEVER intentionally go to or follow other boats. NEVER. Last week was incredibly frustrating for everyone I am sure. Nonetheless I am coming back for more next week simply because I love seeing the sun come up and go down over the water and the rush when a reel sings is something you can't explain! We boated 10 fish in 5 days of fishing last week so no I am not very good at it but I learn each time out. Anchorman has been more then helpful in getting me going. I don't have the luxury of being able to fish these incredible salmon but 6 or 8 days each summer but those are my favorite days of the year! I have not completed the courses or received the instruction that many of the "charter captains" have so give me the top 10 boaters etiquette rules that are most often offended and I will certainly be more mindful of my presence on the water as a small boat. luv2rapala Gary PS If you got any ideas on how to start on Saturday PM me I am humiliated enough this year, I need to catch a fish.

I'm hearing the chatter about the boats last weekend up north. I'm fishing out of Manitowoc and had a few incidents myself. I think the interaction has to do more with the attitude of the captain and less about experience on the water. I have a 22' boat with Auto-pilot and often fish alone or with my 5 year old. I generally am going the same direction as the majority of the boats which lately has been parallel to depth contour or SW-NE. I had a small boat approaching near head on but we were offset by enough that our planer boards would miss by at least 100-150'. I was by the back of the boat and saw him coming, no issue, neither one of us had to veer but he was kind enough to tell me to "steer my f*cking boat" as he passed. I replied with my "Good day, didn't see a problem" and went on my merry way. Later that same weekend, while approaching a huge charter boat head on, I adjusted my course in plenty of time (while still 1/4 to 1/2 mile away) to pass with 300' between us as I could see he had ski's out and I had planer boards. Well when he was about 300 yards away he turned closer to me and when his ski's passed my farthest planer board there wasn't 10' between them. I was getting on the pole to reel it in. I did my part to avoid an issue but since he had the big boat ego he must have expected the right of way. There wasn't anyone on the other side of him that would have prevented him from holding course or veering 5 degrees away to be safe. I think no matter where you go or what you do (referring to similar situations while hunting) there are just some people who's parents didn't do the best job of teaching manners to or for some reason they think they are more important than you and that gives them latitude to act how they want rather than courteously or ethically.
It's too bad as life it too short to have a bad attitude.
Fishing has been okay, once I find the fish each weekend. 3-4 weeks ago I was in 135 fow down 60, 2 weekends ago 45 fow down 25-30 and 75 fow down 10-15 last weekend. If I could fast forward to second day each weekend when I figure out what they want it would be nice.
Enjoy, Keith

"I have not completed the courses or received the instruction that many of the "charter captains" have so give me the top 10 boaters etiquette rules that are most often offended and I will certainly be more mindful of my presence on the water as a small boat."
1 - If you see a charter boat, steer clear because he thinks he owns the water and will tell you that verbally and with erratic hand motions from the back of his boat or loud hailer.
2 - If you see a charter boat and you are in the right of way, alter your path anyway. See #1.
3 - If you see a charter boat and are smaller than it, steer clear because he won't be doing it. See #1 and #2.
If you follow the top 3, the other 7 are pretty irrelevant.

You're probably one of the many powering up to wide open in the fog and running peoples' gear over. Let me put it this way: if you had a short window of opportunity to make your yearly living, wouldn't you take what you're doing very seriously?

"if you had a short window of opportunity to make your yearly living"
You mean earning a living using a PUBLIC resource that everyone who buys a license has a right to regardless of their boat size? Charter captains choose that line of work. That does not grant you any additional rights over the guys in smaller boats and on shore.

Whatever man, I really don't care what you think of my profession, if you really think it's that easy- come and try it. Let's not forget who shows up at the meetings about stocking that PUBLIC fishery and who fights tooth and nail to provide better facilities and more stocking to this fishery. And then let's not forget the fuel we buy in town, several thousand gallons of fuel, the thousands we spend at local businesses every day- not just on weekends, or the tens of thousands of dollars in dockage, local taxes and LICENSES to fund this public fishery. I'm sorry you've had bad experiences with some guys, but it's Way More likely that they're that way with small boats because of the hundreds of dollars in tackle they've had chopped off trying to play nice

Well done! Nice to see a captain that admits to thinking they own the water and should get preferential treatment by other boaters. But, by the way " but it's Way More likely that they're that way with small boats because of the hundreds of dollars in tackle they've had chopped off trying to play nice" - it is more likely they got their stuff cut off because they refused to alter their course thinking they own the water and that everyone else should always follow rules 1-3 as I stated above .

I've met a ton of captains, we all agree that the water is for sharing- but i would highly doubt you know the rules of the road better than they do

And finally, if you think it's bad where you are- go to Sturgeon Bay
