Just got back from Temple Bay Lodge on Eagle Lake in Ontario, Canada. It was myself, Danny, Michael, and Ken (Kingfisher). It was a very successful week with pretty good weather. We did get a couple of days with rain, but we endured and were rewarded with some fantastic fishing.
We generally fish on our own since we know the lake well and do fine by ourselves. However, Ken surprised us on the first day by hiring a Muskie guide, Jeff. He worked very hard to put us on fish. It was a bright, sunny day and the Muskies weren't real active. I had a follow early on with a white glide bait while fishing weeds.
A bit later, a huge Muskie followed my glide bait right to the boat. The guide, Jeff, estimated it at over 50 inches. It seemed like slow motion as she turned away from the lure and disappeared. At the same spot, Michael got a nice 31.5 inch Northern Pike. He had a bit of a hard time holding it as the fish did not want to keep still.
Later on, Danny also had a follow from a Muskie on a black and orange Double Cowgirl. He did, however, land another 31.5 incher just like Michael's fish. We have video of it, but no pics.
That evening was a really hot trolling bite for Walleyes. The sunnier it is all day, the better the evening trolling bite. We landed 21 nice Walleyes that evening while trolling. Here's a few:
I love this pic with the sunset in the background:
I also landed a big Pike that evening in addition to the Walleyes:
The next day was a bit rainy and stormy. We missed out on a few hours of fishing. When we did get out, the fish were active.
We even got some doubles:
Ken caught the biggest Pike of the trip. It was around 34 inches.
A few other Walleye from the trip:
Ken took this one on a spinner off a reef:
We caught a few Saugers mixed in with the Walleyes. Michael got one that was so skinny that it's head was the thickest part of the fish.
The jigging bait of choice was the Red Dace Minnow:
Towards the end of the week we needed 8 keeper sized Pike for our take home limits. We're pretty picky about the size that we take home. We targeted the toothy critters, and got what we needed.
Ken got a huge Smallmouth:
We fished for Muskies at various times over the course of every day. We had some follows that I mentioned earlier. Danny had a couple of follows on the last day at the same reef two different times. I also had a huge one follow up a 16 inch Walleye that I was reeling in. It would've been quite a sight if he had hit the Walleye. Ironically, the only Muskie we caught was by me while casting a small spinner for Pike. It was a short cast that only went half the distance I wanted it to. I saw him come up and whack it. The fish measured 25.5 inches and fought much harder than his size.
Our final totals for the week were:
206 Walleyes
128 Northern Pike
42 Perch
3 Smallmouth Bass
1 Muskie
It was a fun week, and we're counting down the time until next year's trip.
