In an effort to increase survival of brown trout, all yearling brown trout stocked so far in 2010 that typically get stocked in Marinette & Oconto Counties were brought over to the Door Co side of the bay (Stone Quarry). The hope is to put those fish closer to deeper water and away from spring walleye runs. Here are some additional changes happening this year with regards to brown trout: 1) VHS was confirmed this winter in Lake Superior, and the Brule Hatchery raises St. Croix brown trout which are normally destined for inland waters. In an effort to avoid stocking potentially VHS positive trout into inland waters, those St. Croix strain yearlings will be delivered to Green Bay (already VHS positive). As a swap, the Wild Rose strain raised with VHS-free water sources at Lakewood and Thunder River will be stocked inland. 2) WDNR is working with the US Fish & Wildlife Service for the use of their large vessel, the R/V Spencer Baird, to stock a significant portion of the St. Croix browns offshore in Green Bay. The date is a moving window based on the vessel's schedule to stock lake trout in Lake Michigan. The earliest this could happen is the week of May 23rd. Chinook salmon stocking remained status quo, with the exception that we had to shift the Little River quota to the Menominee River because of extremely low water levels at the mouth, Krause Road, and Little River Road.

Too bad a pair of late teenagers decided to have their way with the browns at the stone quarry. It may have been fun, but we all know every fish they caught died. I personally watched them catch around 50. And they were there for hours. I politely informed them that they were killing each and every one they caught but they were not having it. Thanks for the reports Steve.
