Hi I'm new to the site. I launch out of Burns Ditch in Portage and was hoping that some of you would share some GPS coordinates for areas around East Chicago up to Michigan City trolling for Salmon etc. and fishing for pearch. Some what new at this(two years boating) and really have a lot to learn. I use some different combination rigs to troll for Salmon, and catch some in the areas around the breakwalls around Portage and Gong area in East Chicago. Thanks in advance for any input.
Kind Regards
Jeff

Welcome to the site. We usually don't give out GPS numbers. Will say you can usually go straight out of burns harber....set up in 60 foot of water spread your baits out at different depths. Troll out till you start marking and catching fish...then stay at that depth trolling east or west..north south...or sw to ne troll..Keep your speed 2.4 2.7..kings like it around 3. Hope this helps
You want to catch steelhead...try early am and flat line plugs 150 back on boards

You can listen and get good reports when others are out on channel 88, or channel 5. I have found that MC and East Chicago fisherman are really friendly and helpful. Dont be afraid to call. Jeff Eck The Rodfather Out of Mich City

Hey! I fish out of portage once or twice a week. Will be happy to give gps #'s when I've fished or am fishing. Most boats out of portage or east chicago wiil be on channel 68. The past month have been fishing the state line 44/ 14 to 46/16. the past two weeks have been in closer 41/10 to 42/09. Fish have also been right out of the ditch anywhere from 25 to 48 fow. Have not been out in 10 days do not know what these north winds are going to do to water temps. Cold water was down 35 to 40 ft. Will be out on the water thurs 7/29 in the a.m. Feel free to call. Good Luck, Ken. my boat is Y-Knot

Many Portage fishermen share coordinates, I guess there are some folks who post on on this site that don't.
Check 68 and 88, 05 also.
Another thing if you notice about this forum is that the Indiana fishermen post alot more info. than the Illinois crowd....and help each other more.

Most use 68 out of East Chicago and 80 out of Portage. Also, as far as giving gps numbers, if you check the history logs and other sites, you will see that gps #s are given regular. This is what these sites are all about. There are some tight lipped dudes out there that want to receive, but not give. You can choose who you wanna be.

I have found that the numbers do not mean as much as the depth to start in. Get out there and look for schools of bait, and usually the fish are not too far from them. Good thing about salmon are they are big enough and deep enough that you know when you mark one. Also keep at least one planner board out so you can pick up the surface huggin steelhead that you will never see on your sonar.
