Rolled out of Cedar Grove, around 4:00 am to head down to Racine with my dad (missing Mr. Scroos who's playing in the woods trying to shoot the perfect turkey). I was excited about the first trip of the year and more so the calmness of the lake. Very nice harbor in Racine and extremely easy to get out of. Caught a fishing report late last night that said 150-250 fow was working well. So I figured that's where I would set up. While powering out it became apparent to me that it was going to take a long time to power out, even with the 150 hp Yamaha at full throttle. The lake doesn't fall off very quickly there. Decided to set up around 115 fow with a SE troll as the water temp was declining with the deeper water temperature.
Set up with 2 riggers, 2 dipsies, and 2 boards. First hit/fish came shortly after set up, a silver flasher with a small silver and blue fly, back 112' on a #2 setting with one ring attached near 125 fow.
After working that area for a while, we set course on an easterly troll. After a good 1.5 hour lull in the action we had a hit/fish at 180 fow on a back rigger 86' down with a flasher fly combo similar to the one on the dipsy.
We finally settled in at 186 fow. For about the next 1 hour it was a coho just about every 15 minutes. Mostly on the dipsy and one on the rigger.
Shortly after that hour we couldn't keep the dipsy in the water. It was going off every 5 minutes until we reached our limit. While packing up the lines, the other rigger went off. A blue coyote dodger with a blue green fly.
Finished up 11/11, throwing the last one back of course, but a fantastic way to start out the season!
What worked:
7 fish- #2 setting dipsy, 112' back, silver flasher - blue/sliver fly
3 fish- Back rigger, down 86' white/pink/black flasher/fly
1 fish- Other back rigger, down 110' blue coyote dodger, blue green fly
What didn't:
-Anything with orange
-11" skateboard with fly
-A few spoon
-3 and 5 color boards
All fish coho's. A few above average sized, nothing special.
