I've read alot about dipsey colors, so I have to ask the question: does the color & style of the rigger weight make a difference?
The reason I ask is that I'm trying to outfit my boat on a shoestring budget & when I found 2 10 pound weights at a garage sale for $1.00 each I grabbed them. They aren't a standard ball, they are shaped like a "torpedo" and they are gray so I'm just wondering if they'll work or did I waste my money?

A buddy of mine scuba dives and every so often he dives the intake for the filteration plant in milwaukee and that is where I get my trolling balls. Thank you again for all those who donated.... Back in the day people use coffee cans loaded with cement and they caught fish. I dont think the color of the weight matters, Are you catching fish with the weights you have? If your bored or want to try something new, get a can of rustoleum and paint them. The most expensive weights are the ones shaped like fish and that I am guessing is pretty close to what you have now so I think you lucked out.

As long as they track straight and do not blow back excessively, it does not seem to matter what color or shape weight is. Tangling downrigger cables together is evil.

I have 4 riggers. 2 with orange and 2 just lead with no paint. There is no difference in catch ratio.

Thanks everyone...now I feel better about my garage sale find. I hate being "cheap" about setting up the boat but the way things are at work right now I don't want to lay out too much cash for fishing equipment. So far I've been able to get pretty good deals on just about everything secondhand except for baits, which I prefer to buy as I need/want/desire them.
Now I just need go put it all together & get out fishing!!!
