I broke three rules of mine for fishing lake Michigan yesterday. 1. don’t go fishing close to a full moon. 2. don’t go fishing when a wind forecast has an E in it. 3. don’t leave fish to find fish.
The ride out was a bumpy 2 to 3 footers versus the forecast of 1 foot. Set up in 200 feet of water straight out and worked south east with no bites until 270 fow. Took a Coho dipsy 40 loc mag UV happy meal. That area had more small pockets of bait fish that I had seen on the way out. We worked that area for another hour and a half plus taking three more Coho. We saw about nine big boats headed east But by the time we were ready to leave this area they were all coming back towards us. I wanted to find a king bite or some rainbows so headed south south west making it to under 200 feet. Zero bites.
Decided that maybe I should head back to where we were getting some fish just in case there were more there. We had one drive-by and the long troll back into the waves. We got within about the width of a plotter line away from my previous track and another bite. Shortly there after another and then another. What was interesting is on our return there we noticed that there was a debris line of junk. No discernible temperature break on the surface which was 53.5. It was 3° warmer out there down 30 than 200 feet. If it had not been so rough I think we would’ve seen that line earlier. Again more bait fish around there.
Hot set up of the day was one of Captain Rich Gorske’s creation the Cross Dresser fly chartreuse mylar and chartreuse glow Flashabo and small spin and glow. I will attach a picture. Ended up on five of my rods at the end. Other things at work 125 copper with Brad shamrock and a crashed ice big Al fish flash, three color Brad’s crushed ice orange with a red chartreuse Big Al flasher, 4 color Brad’s hot tamale big Al fish flash red and silver, Dipsy 70 LOC white glow spin doctor Green Mirage fly.
Ended with 6 coho, two rainbow and two lake trout. Trolled 2.6 to 3.1 on the depth raider. The forecast with the hurricane coming to Wisconsin looks like the salmon will be safe for better than a week with more East wins.
