I am guessing a number of you who have winterized your boats will moan a bit when you see the great October action, best king bite of the year.
We started off the main gap and 90 feet of water with enough light to set the boards. Action started quickly and took a while to get all the rods out going 3 for 5 the first 30 minutes, all rigger bites. Initially marked some bait and a few hooks. Then it absolutely died for us. Friends north of us doing much better so headed there direction.
Finally another 2 yr old 3 miles north of our start and a couple of shakers we released. One of our friends was doing well in120 to150 feet of water and started going that direction. Blessed to have friends out there because two other friends called who finally found the bait in shallower water.
We made it into around 80 feet of water around 11AM and I was discouraged to see the water was fairly dirty. However a nice three-year-old followed by another convinced us the fish were here. Then it was game on. downriggers at 35 with lighted green pro troll and super frog and downrigger at 55 with lighted white pro troll and super frog we’re definitely the hottest rods. The same two flashers on my wire Dipsys at 130 and 85 loc 2.5 set also contributed. Down Riggers and dipsy divers accounted for all10 three-year-olds, two were over 15 and 1>16!
We ran a five color, six color, seven color, 100 copper, 125 copper, 150 copper 175 copper and 200 copper over the course of the day and they did not contribute much despite multiple bait changes. The only set up to catch more than one bite was the six color with a magnum UV NBK.
Even in the area where we caught the fish we did not see any suspended bait but some plastered to the bottom. A few hooks but not as many as one would’ve expected considering the bite. I thought this would have been a day for the Panoptics to show us a lot but it didn’t but we saw an occasional fish swim into the riggers. It was another speed troll day at 2.9 to 3.3 on the DRx-10. We kept 17 kings two of which were mortally wounded shakers and two lake trout releasing three other shakers. It was my best October catch of 3yr olds ever. Never missed a big fish bite so a great day by any standard.
