I was excited to see Saturday morning Facebook pictures of some great Salmon catches out of Milwaukee from the day before. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen numbers of Chinooks. I was unable to roust a crew so a friend and I joined my speed trolling buddy Steve for a great day on the water.
We set up in 95 feet of water straight out of the north gap finding 48° surface temp. Didn’t have downtemp very long because we must’ve run into something and lost our Depth Raider probe, UGG! When we had time to look there were hooks and lots of bait especially around 75 feet down.
It was a spoon bite and the majority of bites came on the two downriggers, early set at 40 and 52 and later at 52 and 65. The hot one was something he only had one of, a no longer made silver streak Alewife magnum. Seas were slightly bumpy so unfortunately we missed seeing bites on the three color, five color and 100 copper capturing 8 inch natural kings. So those lines were dead for the first hour or so but no telling how long.
I think we only captured one boxer on the four planer board lines. Three bites came on wire dipsys 3 set 100 or 125 feet LOC. We ended up boxing 10 kings of which three were three-year-olds and the biggest 12 pounds along with one small brown. We lost three big fish bites and threw back six squirts. We spent most of the time 100 to 120 feet of water zigzagging our way points. The vast majority of boats were in the same depth range and most were north of us. Depending on direction most of the time GPS speed 2.9 to 3.3. I couldn’t’ help but wonder what some tuna would have done when the bite slowed?
Wouldn’t you know the weather turns bad just as soon as the fall silver fish show up. Not sure when it will be fishable again but not putting the boat away yet. We have had other late fall bites that have been fantastic. Considering how bad the end of this season was it was rejuvenating to get that many bites again! Thanks Steve and Steve.
