Sorry, it wasn't fishing, and I doubt if I can do the story justice, but let me tell you what I watched unfold last night from our apartment window.
As I was looking out the window, I saw a rabbit chasing a squirrel through the yard, and at the same time I watched as a crow swooped down onto what I soon realized was a rabbit's nest. Six baby rabbits jumped from the bed and tried to flee, but the crow caught one.
At the same time, the mother rabbit stopped chasing the squirel and turned to chase the crow away from her baby. Now that the rabbit's attention was directed elsewhere, the squirrel turned and started back toward the rabbit nest. The mother rabbit saw this, turned and attacked the squirrel. They had a knock down drag out right there and the rabbit won. The squirrel fled the scene, tuffs of fur were everywhere.
It gets worse. Evidently the sounds of the fight, fleeing baby rabbits, and the squeals of the one the crow caught must have attracted a bigger predator, as a large raccoon soon approached the area. I watched somewhat helplessly as the coon tracked down two of the babies and ate them. The mother rabbit attempted to run the coon away, to no avail, and soon gave up the fight. She was out-matched and out-weighed by 20 pounds.
On the bright side, I saw the same mother rabbit a short while ago with two of her remaining babies. Whether they make it or not, who knows, but I now have a new respet for rabbits. I never saw one attack other animals before, and especially ones that were larger.
And who would have thought it, right here smack in the middle of the city! I never saw anything like this even in the country back home!
Okay, back to fishing guys!
