Got on the water before 4 AM setting lines in about 100 feet of water marking bait and hooks. Decided to check temperature before setting lines to see what was down below. For probably the seventh or eighth time having big Jon Riggers since 1985 another rod on the boom broke with my probe and downrigger ball going over the side but stayed hooked up. Had to haul them up by hand and wait until some light to repair. Yup carry two extra rods because it has happened so many times before. What a PIA! I replaced two Capt Paks with big John Brutes 7 yrs ago with zero problems with breakage.
Missed a Dipsy 70loc white flasher grn/glow fly and same set up 70 down on the downrigger then nothing 115fow. Decided to head to the 170 to 200 zone where a friend went 12 for 19 yesterday. Picked up a two-year-old natural king on the 70 foot rigger 135fow. Kept going east no bites all the way out to 230 and Zig and zagging back and listening to comrades that were not doing any better. In the past it seemed best to go east as the morning progressed but didn’t work for us today. Some who turned back and went shallow got a few bites but nobody really had a great day.
Decided to continue south because nobody was there on the 200 foot line and had three bites within 15 minutes taking a lake trout on three color and a Wonder Bread spoon and another LT on a 4 color with a flasher fly. And that was it. Put down 11 inch paddle double aqua fly three color SWR down 90 and it got a bite but didn’t stick.
Don’t quite know what to make of this fishing. We had a total of eight bites and only three fish. Early we were the leaders but others moved forward with 4 to 5 fish in their catches. I can only hope that once a decent thermocline sets up that it will be easier to find some fish. Not sure my buddies will want to spend 2.5hr on the road each way Friday for a catch like today.
