Finally some fish arrived in Wisconsin and it was my first outing of the year, at least three weeks later than normal. A friend was kind enough to share information about where they are catching fish off Kenosha. We headed out a little south of town to 120 to 140 feet of water marking no bait but occasional hooks. Surface temp was 50° in 120feet of water and 43° down 20. We headed towards our destination and turned about a quarter-mile short of the goal because all the other boats were north of us and only one boat to the south and we had no bites. Figured the fish had moved.
We meandered around 120 to 145 feet of water zigzagging in and out covering 4.5 miles north of our fish reports. Headed back south and about 9 AM finally caught a nice rainbow on Brad‘s red with black striped Thin Fish 35 back on a mono board. Shortly thereafter an old friend who I fished with went by in his boat fishing that far south getting ready for today’s Cash On The Line tournament. He called me saying they were 12 for 15 and would you believe about a quarter of a mile south of where I turned around early morning.
He told me 50 foot down with a green flasher and an aqua fly was working for them. I put that out and continued south. When We got about a half a mile north of where he was catching fish that set up fired off with a 10 pound king. About five minutes later a Coho. I put a similar set up on the 40 foot rigger and not long after an 18.5 pound king became part of a triple. Other fish came on 20 foot rigger baby chartreuse/orange spin doctor and black/ purple/copper fly. Third fish was a three color Brad‘s Lady Bug and 6” red chartreuse Big Al Fish Flash. Same set up fired about 20 minutes later for another Coho. Next three color with Brad’s Hot Tamale and 6” Big Al red silver a rainbow.
Things got quiet. Decided we’re going to quit pretty soon and with about 20 minutes to go Red with black stipes Thin Fish fired with a large fish flying all over the water. I thought what a dandy rainbow. It was a struggle to get it to come to the net but managed to do so. My shoulder was hurting from netting the 18 pounder so I didn’t bring it in the boat nor put it in the cooler but did take a quick picture of it. When we got to the cleaning station the DNR Creel census person was checking fish. I asked him how much the rainbow weighed and he said it wasn’t a rainbow it was a Coho! That was almost twice as large as any Coho I have ever taken in the month of May. It was very likely one of those genetic flukes that stay out in the lake an extra year.
A great start to the year especially for my friend Jim whose turn coincided with all three bigger fish. He did a great job on them. Hope to get back there soon.
Two kings, 3 Coho and 4 rainbows. Because fish were so scattered my average speed on the DRx-10 Depth Raider was 2.9 to 3.0 at the ball! That’s a bit faster than most travel but the fish didn’t seem to mind.
Sure was nice of my friend Eric to call and put me on a good bite. He went back there this AM and sent me a picture of a king that bounced the 30# mark on his scale! He should do well in the tournament if the weather didn’t cause a cancellation.
