Finally a break in the weather and wind! It’s exciting to see cold water near shore again. However with recent almost every other day changes of warm top to bottom or in the 40s down 30 I guessed the fish would not return shallow right away. So we headed out deep fishing 280 to 320 feet of water.
The break was down about 50 feet. 56 feet of cable out and 12# torpedo @2.6-2.9 on the Depth Raider DRx10 the temp was 63 to 68 but when we slowed to net a fish it would drop to the low 50s. We marked occasional hooks in the top 80 feet of water and occasionally small schools of bait.
First bite was on the 300 copper to get my brother’s arms back in shape. Good ol Spotted Cow and Big Al Fish Flash in glow. Then a double, 76 foot rigger with white Inticer glow tape and half green half glow fly and same thing on the 63 rigger missing a Coho that jumped free but got the Laker.
That miss was one of many to come. Some count every bite but I like to count fish that are on for a little while versus drive-bys. The wire Dipsys at 105 and 128 on two sets accounted for at least seven drive-bys with Spotted Cow and white with glow/green spin Doctor and the other Spin Doctor was UV. One was a knot failure that had a big fish hit before we could get it reset completely from having just put in a nice king on the same rod. Man do I hate seeing curly line at the end where the hook should be! I wondered if the full moon accounted for the short hits?
The lake was like a big water bed and only saw two other boats.They disappeared when the fog set in. We ended up 8 for 11 and 8-9 drive-bys. 3 bows, 3LT and 2 kings. Some days I think I need a second counter just to keep up with the drive bys. However very grateful for all that action considering recent reports. Hope the water stabilizes and the fish come shallower.
