A couple of weeks ago a friend was telling me of his success in Deepwater trolling between 2.7 and 3.2 mph at the ball running flashers. Heresy! Are you sure your equipment is accurate? He invited me to see for myself. I joined him able bring along 2 of my fishing friends and indeed it worked. We landed 4 rainbows, 2 Coho and 4 LT and at least 10 other bites. Fishing shallow has been slow so since then I have not been fishing in less than 250 feet of water often find myself in over 300 feet of water. And yes “power” trolling!
Yesterday worked 250 to 320fow finding 50° water down 50 and trolled 2.6-3.0 On my Depth Raider DRx-10. We marked a bunch of bait and hooks in the dark and for the most part disappeared the rest of the morning. We worked old waypoints seeing fewer hooks than other days.
First bite was a nice rainbow coming on a 200 copper with Brad’s NBK and Big Al Fish Flash blue and green. Second bite was a screamer on 300 copper and Brad‘s Spotted Cow with glow Fish Flash, 20 pound king. We worked those way points but no second bites. Really meandered around from 250 to 310 foot of water getting bit here or there with no pattern. Ended the day 11 for 11 with 4 drive-bys. 2 bow, 1 king and 7 LT.
This was sort of a typical day since going deep, more Lakers than silverfish. My friends are delighted to get Lake Trout. Contrary to general opinion my friends love to smoke them, one serves them as poor man’s lobster and from time to time I will grill one under 8 pounds and hard to tell the difference between it and salmon when using my Cajun butter.
First photo yesterday and other two from a day last week. PS Thanks Steve for the lesson.
I for one am ready for some shallower water and see if “power” trolling works as well in there.
