I had a report of good coho bite inside the hill south of town a couple of days ago. However last night friends were down in that area and the bait was gone and they only had one bite. So I headed a little south east of town and set up inside the hill 85fow finding 63° water as we left the harbor and 55° water when I setup. We marked some bait and occasional hook and I intended to stay inside the hill but with a couple of bites found myself over the edge and out in 107 feet of water. We kept getting bites so I decided to stay on that line and not leave fish to find fish.
We kept getting bit from time to time, fairly steady on a variety of presentations. A lot less bait than I’ve seen in my most recent trips to MKE and my hot rods, the wire Dipsys went zero for zero changing line on counter multiple times. Current from the north about 0.5mph and 52.8 down 35 and 50.8 down 50 105fow. All was well until a little after nine when the fog rolled in along with a brisk north wind. In the next 2+ hours we were one for two so cold and went home.
Again no king bites and not many that I know of for others. Had two nice rainbows, one smaller lake trout and the rest were Coho going 15 for 16 and 4 other drive-bys. A much better hook up rate then I had been experiencing. Really tired of terrible fishing weather so happy to have newbies out get to experience busy time in relatively calm seas….while it lasted.
