Original Post By GBAGLSF: If you are concerned about the Whitefish and walleye fishery on the lower bay PLEASE attend the WDNR meeting coming up. Whitefish management: The DNR will hold public meetings Jan. 10 and 11 on whitefish management in Green Bay and Lake Michigan.
The agency in May floated a proposal to allow commercial fishermen to fill unused whitefish quotas in southern Green Bay. At the same time, members of the Lake Michigan Commercial Fishing Board expressed a desire to keep and sell walleyes and other "bycatch" they netted in southern Green Bay.
Public response was strongly against the proposal, so the DNR opted not to pursue a rule change.
The January meetings are an attempt to collect additional public feedback, identify specific concerns, potential compromises and information gaps, according to the agency.
The whitefish meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. each night.
On Jan. 10, the meeting is in the Lake Michigan Room at the DNR Green Bay Service Center, 2984 Shawano Ave., Green Bay.
On Jan. 11, it's at the Door County Government Building, 421 Nebraska St., Sturgeon Bay.
