My mentor Jason, his dad Pete, Garrett (Hit N Run) and I drove down to Kenosha early this morning to try to take advantage of the coho bite ------ it was the first time three of us had ever fished that harbor area, with Garrett having done very well just a few days ago.....to say the least it was a little "chilly" this morning!
We got our money's worth this morning so the action on the boat heated us all up once we got into the fish!!
We ran out of the harbor to about 130 FOW on a ENE troll doing 2.2 SOG and ran a 12 line spread with four riggers, two dipsies and five mono board lines and one two color leadcore board line......
We had no action until about 151 FOW when (after three swings and misses to start with in 30 minutes of trolling) we popped a double with a coho on a dipsy and a 10 pound king on a back rigger.....In all this morning, we had seven doubles!!
We worked 151 to 190 FOW for the duration of the trip, criss-crossing our path several times by doubling back over the areas we had doubled up........When we popped our 13th fish, we sped up our troll to about 2.5 to 2.7 and nailed our remaining limiting fish in pretty quick order......
Here is all of the action we had this morning as to what we ran and what got nailed:
(6-7) 8 inch pearl fishscale flasher with Rainbow Richard Long Legged Aqua Fly down 82-85 feet with a 20 foot stretch from the ball
(2-3) Single O orange dodger with a Magnadyne Coho Killer Fly on a dipsy with 42 LOC
(3-4) 8 inch Green Coyote Flasher w/White cracked one side and lead on the other coupled with a Big Weenie Rubber Proctologist fly down 38 feet on a side rigger with a 30 foot stretch (first time I have ever run this fly and it did very well!!!)
(1-1) 7 inch Michigan Stinger Coho Killer Red Glow dodger with Magnadyne Coho Killer Fly on side rigger down 36 feet with a 20 foot stretch
(1-1) Orange OO dodger with 4KFlies Orange Creamsicle peanut fly on mono board line (nice 9 pound rainbow).....thanks Keith!!!!
(2-3) Chartreuse 6 inch Baby Spin Doctor w/orange inlay with 4KFlies Purple/Gold peanut fly on dipsy with 42 LOC (a Red Rider staple!)
(1-4) Goldstar Pink Alewife spoon on back rigger down 55-75 feet
(2-3) Magnum Pro King Gold/Black w/glow ladderback spoon on two color SWR on back rigger down 65 feet
(4-4) Orange OO dodger with various other green and blue peanut flies on mono board lines
We ended up going 22 for 30 today with one early 10 pound king, two rainbows including a 9 pounder and 19 various sized coho --- a great trip! We had to turn the hooks on two coho when pulling lines......
The riggers and dipsies were hot early and then the board lines took off as the sun rose and warmed the water.......It was a wonderful day to be out there and we all enjoyed the laughter, ribbing and reeling in of fish throughout the morning.....
When we got to the cleaning station we were greeted by two wardens, one of which will be the new one in the Ozaukee area, and they checked our fish count and took some pictures with all of us in the picture.....a very nice gesture!
Here are some pictures and videos of the fun and action on the boat this morning.......Thanks to Jason, Pete and Garrett for a terrific coho run trip!!
After cleaning the fish and dividing them up, I took the rainbow fillets and dropped them off at Relay's house to enjoy eating his favorite fish at least once more!
Leaving the harbor channel area at 5:00 a.m. for the slaughter
Pete reeling in one of 19 coho salmon we managed to pop this morning
Our catch --- 22 for 30 limited with one king, 2 rainbows and 19 coho!
Those Kenosha juvenile delinquents have a sense of humor, changing the word Port to Fart in the flower bed area! ;D
Jason and Pete's 19-1/2 foot Triumph Center Console after the trip....it will need a bath from all that gore (lol).....
The Videos
(Please excuse some of the salty language as many times we were unaware of any filming (lol).....
