New to the big lake

Looking to do a little perch-en this year. I really don't want to go to far out yet, any advice? Is Portage a good place to put in I've heard you don't really have to go out far to catch perch, haven't been on Mich for a long time last time was on a charter for salmon. Now have a nice 18.5 skeeter deep v fiberglass boat and would love to go try my luck. Any help to a novice would be greatly appreciated.....

I fish out of Michigan City in a 19 Ft. Starcraft. You do not have to go far to be in 50 Ft. of water and the perch are mostly inside of that.
