im in the market for new (or used) riggers
im also taking suggestions on what you guys like .... my current riggers are older then me with no release or counters you crank them down and up and gotta count how many times you crank 1 turn = 2 feet FUN EH?
i was taught riggers on a boat with 4 penn fathoam masters and really liked those ... but after using uni trolls im not objecting to cannon either ... ive never worked with big jons at all
i run 12lb balls currently and i only run 2 riggers slightly angled off my corners so a 2 foot boom is all i need

I use the cannon uni troll, had it for 3 years and hasnt caused me any grief, other than my lack of production with it. But its not the riggers fault. For the money i am happy with it, and it can be taken off easy and stored.

I now have my boat set up with two uni troll and two Mag 10 hs. The mag 10's are new this spring and are great. The uni troll's are also great for manuals, super reliable. We had big jons and they were ok but slow and dis not have the auto stop. I fish superior a lot and end up bottom bouncing a fair amour and the speed maters on a large reef by isle royal! The uni's were faster than big jon's.

I like scottys. If you are looking for electric riggers they are pretty awesome. They are fast, you can lift the boom up to retrieve your ball and set lines. They have been super reliable for me. Some people don't like them cause they look like lawnmowers. I have big jon riggers as well because they came with the boat. Scottys are way better.

I used to have four Big Jon electric Captains Paks on the old boat.......very good speed and nice bouncy booms.......no auto stop, unless I wanted to shell out $70 a piece and install them myself.....tilt/tip up is nice to have, and swivel base is included....they wont handle a 20-pound rigger weight, unless you move up to the Brutes......
I now have a pair of Cannon Mag20DT's as back riggers and Mag 10HS's as side riggers on the new boat........lightening fast......hard to get used to bringing them up a few feet and stopping them....takes a little getting used to.......the best feature about them hands down is the auto stop, which is included with the riggers at purchase.....swivel base included.....will handle heavier weights....

I forgot to mention with the scottys swilvel base included, two rotating rod holders and a swivel base. Pretty good deal. I think the pro packs 1116 are $500 or so.

If you only need a 2' boom I would go with Riviera manuals. I still like my 1 manual I have left. Of course if you have deep pockets go with electrics.
I know of 3 used electrics,pm me and I'll send you a phone number.

I've got a pair of Mag 10's on my boat and they've been great. I've also had Uni-trolls in the past and liked them. If your budget allows it I'd go with the electrics in whatever brand you choose.

everyone has a favorite,,ive used cannon,,walker and now scotty down riggers,,i love em!! i got 2 1116 electrics,,one out to each side and 2 1090 manuals straight out back in each corner,,never had a problem with any of them,,but them stopper beads on the electrics will really mess up the antenna for a depht raider!! i gotta find someone who sells that special antenna for the scottys

Yes i agree with Reid, if you go manual for cost savings Riviera's are great. The one left on the boat is probably older than me, and they still make replacement parts if you ever need to replace anything. I can crank that baby as fast as i can and beat damn near any electric rigger. Electrics are the cats @$$ but you will also pay out your @$$ for them as well. Electric stop is nice on the fast electric Cannons because you forget how fast they are coming up. With the slower Big Jons i really like their bouncy booms, tip up feature, and with the addition of the captains pack you get the extra rod holders which is nice for moving rods out of your way when you have a very green king in the morning.

I've always liked the weight retrievers vs. tip up booms- but that's just a personal preference. Scotty's work well and don't use any juice on the way down, also pull an OK speed with 12 lb balls. They're fugly and the rod holders are absolutely useless, their replacements aren't much better. Cannons I like, fast- good retrievers and I like the looks, but they're cumbersome and again- stupid rod holders. Big Jon's are great, but I'm not a huge fan of the booms flexing (personal preference here) but I think they look ok and I like their customer service and their rod holders are the best- hands down. Walkers are decent, good bang for the buck and get the job done, Vectors are awesome but ownership troubles is a concern right now- not to mention the price tag.
Just my 2 pennies.

Some real workhorses day in and day out, the Cannon Unitroll 10's are just about the best manual riggers for the money in my opinion.....their booms extend from 24 to 53 inches, as the 5's are fixed at 24 inches if I recall.....
If you bought new, they would run you around $260 each depending on where you shopped.......you could probably snag them online on EBAY or Craig's List, etc for roughly around $300 for a pair......
Good luck with your purchases of riggers!
