I was excited to read recent reports from Port that some good catches of coho were coming in 40-100fow. That beats the 14mile trip many are making around the state line especially considering Monday’s wind forecast. Just before heading for bed I read Capt Jason’s weekend report with nice catches in less than 50fow so called my crew, we were changing destination.
Headed out just in time to not need lights. We set our 12 rod spread and had them all out before Brad’s Happee Lunch/White dodger/LBB teaser 20’ rigger bounced and was gone. Shortly dropped to 30’ and fired again and fell off half way back. That was the last bite for the day on the deep rigger despite some lure changes. We marked some bait plastered to the bottom and occasional hooks with water temp 47.5. We were only 2 for 4 by 830 then the riggers and dipsys started to get some action. The boards were surprisingly quiet until late in the trip. About 10AM the bait started to come off the bottom and bites increased. The 30’ 3 set with Hot Tamale cut plug rocked with 6 fish. Coho love red lures but apparently so do kings. The 15.5# blasted out to 200 loc picking up the 2 color and 3 color. Luck and patience found us able to get it untangled and even managed to land the rigger fish that ripped past the mess.
Westerly winds were brisk and decided to pull lines with 19 but lady luck found 4 more while clearing lines. I started with no spoons because I don’t have a lot luck on them for early season coho. I started with an even mix of coho rig peanut flies/red dodger and various Brad’s cut plugs. Some ask why I run them when targeting coho? Peanut flies for me rarely take a king or brown. The cut plugs catch everything including 3 kings this trip that all had their adipose fins.
