Just now starting to see a few mature kings in the pictures guys are posting. The Michigan side isn't exactly going gangbusters either. It's weird...that's for sure.
Big fish in SAR was a laker. 3 of the top 5 were lakers. What does that tell you?

Maybe Scrapper...but with a limit of 2 per day, how the hell will they get thinned out?

I have no idea, but with the way these fish have adapted to every part of the water column they have become a real threat. They have become the primary consumer of all parts of the bio food chain that our more desired fish depend on. If you like lakers and this offends you, I apologize, but this is about reducing this problem predator. I also don't want to hear about how much you like them.

The increase in greasers is not a coincidence. You can thank the feds for the increase in greasers. While the DNR(s) cut the salmon stocking, the feds are protecting the greasers and didn't allow them to be cut. The long term goal is to see the lake return to as close as its natural form as possible. I seriously doubt that the feds would be upset if Lake Michigan became Lake Huron II. The greasers do serious damage on the alewive population.

Yup the Feds want natives only. Claim that lake trout primarily feed on sculpins. Hogwash. They may get their wish and the result will be empty marinas and a reminant charter industry. Like Lake Superior. Outstanding lake trout fishing, and nobody goes there. Beautiful marinas that can fit 150 boats, there may be 15 on a weekend.

If word gets out there are salmon around at a superior port, the parking lots are full, and a good percentage of the slips also

If you guys think the catch rates are down this year I am pretty sure things not going to be any better the next couple years for salmon. The USFWS was at the fish cleaning station in Kewaunee a couple weeks ago they had literature about the numbers of native and planted salmon. Right now over half the salmon we are catching are natural but the bad news is the 2013 hatch of natural salmon was less then half of normal. That with the cut backs in plantings may result in lower catches in the coming years. But they say if the alewife do not have a good hatch this year it isn't going to matter because there will not be enough food to support a salmon population of this size anyway. Hopefully Lake Michigan is not going to end up like Lake Huron.

I can't complain about my catches this year. My personal preferences don't include lake trout. I do however understand some people like them, but I also like walleye over salmon, and trout, but they don't jump or make your reel scream. IMHO
As far as quitting goes, I will have my gear until the bitter end. Also the hatch of 2013 will impact only the next 2 years and maybe only 1. I really don't care whether I catch a four year old or not, the smaller fish between 5 and 12 lbs. are better table fare. Besides, catching fish is a bonus when out with good friends, beautiful sunsets, and rises. Fish ON.
Saugeye, you are dead on about the hot port theory. Lake trout are not the future of Lake Michigan.

I was making a point that people will come for good salmon fishing. The lake trout fishing can be hot, not many care
