Went to a seminar this weekend. Was a charter captain and he said they used a lot of 10 0z. with a various amount of line out. Had a lead,8-10ft. from bait, then snubber, then 10 oz. He said he had his boards set to release and slide down to snubber. Never did ask him the reason for snubber. Any insight?

I would guess he is using braid so he put a snubber in there for a little stretch.

Griff'n.... I also pull 2 or 4 10oz balls with some success.. I prefer the lead balls over the dipsies due to tangulation..dipsies for me are always wrapped around my downriggers..Anyway I always use snubbers with my 10oz because the charter I used to go with used them..I assumed they take some of the violence out of that initial strike.. lameduck, love my dipies. I can't see were if you are running mono out 100 or say 120 from board that the strike is not absorbed some by the setup. Even with super line. Have no issue with running snubbers, but just don't see that it would be needed. Wire, super line, or even mono on a dipsy I can see, as it is a very violent strike, especially if it's a 4 year old.

Always a clear 12" snubber. It's because it's run on heavy braid and the rods we use are fairly stiff and heavy leader material

Champ .. How often do you change those clear snubbers out?

I have some that are 2-3 years old and kind of yellowing that I still run. If they look dry rotted and cracking a bunch when you pull on them then they get thrown out.
I don't find that the setups that I use them on are all that stealth and I have used snubbers that are bright colors before so I doubt it matters if they are yellowing a bit

I often run 16 oz balls on a rod directly off the side of the boat and always have snubbers on them. The hits are every bit as violent as dipsy hits and I learned the hard way that snubbers were necessary. Now I just need to get a hardhat for when the rookies get that pound ball swinging around while I'm trying to net a pi$$ed off fish.

Best thing I've learned- have them reel up to a bead before the swivel and hold the rod as high as they can over their head and tell them to stare at the rod tip while they're doing it. A 10 oz to the head will ruin a day: a lb ball to the head would knock me right out

It probably explains a few things about me.
