I lost a 12lb ball, Chamberlain release, and a Fish Hawk X4 probe to the bottom of the Bank reef in SB last week. As I wait in anticipation for the new probe to show up, I'm trying to think of ways to prevent the same thing from happening.
I've got new Cannon Mag 10 STX riggers, and they are fast.......too fast for what I'm used to. We popped a fish and I brought the rigger up. The auto stop worked it's magic and stopped at the surface, but to get it in the boat, it's easiest to bring it up another 6-8 inches or so. I tried tapping it up just a bit and it screamed up, knocked the probe into the boom pulley, and pulled the cable through the cannon plastic dealymabob. I watched the whole works go down and darn near cried.
So......I'm wondering. Is there a better way to attached the rigger cable to the ball without having to rely on that plastic cannon dealymabob? Anyone make one that's more secure and won't let the wire pull through it?

After turning 2 Fish Hawk probes and cannonballs into bottom structure, I have now a Dubro shock spring, proseriesfishing.com/documents/files/280108125326.pdf strung onto my cable, above the probe. It works as a shock absorber between the probe and the boom pulley. Bought it from Algoma Hardware. It gives you a fighting chance if a autostop fails, before the cable or terminator shears should your gear come all the way up to the pulley, or if someone hits the "up" button after the probe/cannonball is already at the surface. Knock on fiberglass, 2 years since we said good-bye to a probe.

Do you have more blowback with that spring in the water? You can loosen your clutch on the cannons so if the auto stop fails they will just spin .

What fatcat said. No notable difference in blowback
