I run 7' TDR shimano's in M action and 47 series sealines for spoons and 220 GTO penns for flashers and like those combo's alot. If you can find a TDR/shimano charter special combo for a deal that would be good also.

Last time I checked the rods were 30$ and the reels were 120$ but let me get back to you on that. Marine General had a sweet sale on that combo this spring.

The taloras are great, and I just had an issue with one, brought it to howies tackle and exchanged it for a new one. They have a life time warrantee that the tdrs dont. I do have some old tdrs that are 15 years old I am sure that still work great.. Kyle

7' ugly sticks work fine. 47 sealines on my boat, may not be the "best" but get the job done.

We have a pile of okuma convectors, for the money I dont think they're better reels out there ($65-70 on ebay). That said a lever drag charter special would be nice for a downrigger rod ($100-120 on ebay), and I have a couple of the shimano TR200's for fishing in FL that have stood up to 20 years of saltwater use (less than $100 on ebay).. Only downside is they come with those little bitty handles.. Actually thought of ordering up some of the Okuma power handles and machining them to fit my other reels.. And if you haven't noticed I like buying reels off ebay For rods whatever you can get cheap, we have Cabelas brand and the Daiwa Heartland, both are good and less than 30 bucks. Man I love buying new tackle

Consider Ouma Convector 30 series line counter reels, and an Ugly Stick rod. For the combo, you're probably in the $120 range.
