Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament
Day Two Results — Sunday, July 24, 2011
Twenty-six chinook salmon larger than 20 pounds were weighed in on Day Two, some of them caught late in the evening opening day. Fifteen-year-old Kimberly Sprangers of De Pere hooked the largest of the day, a 25.90-pounder, on a Dragon Fly down deep in more than 300 feet of water Sunday evening around supper time.
Through Sunday night, a total of 40 20-pound-plus “kings” were brought to scale by ticket-holding entrants. A number of others — including a 28-pounder at Kewaunee — were also weighed but the anglers had not bought tickets prior to fishing.
Kewaunee also put another 25-plus on the scale Monday morning that was taken late Sunday evening, also from deep water, while Baileys Harbor had a pair of 26s Monday morning, both of them big enough to move into the top two spots. We’ll have more on those fish and any other whoppers in tomorrow’s report.
Entry fee is $25 for the full tournament or $13 for a daily chance. Everyone on the boat must have a ticket and must be listed on the weigh-in sheet along with their ticket numbers.
First place is $10,000 cash, a free mount of the winning fish by Scott Mansur’s Northland Taxidermy of Algoma and a custom sterling silver chinook salmon ring with a diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer of wisconsincharm.com.
In addition to paying out more than 100 places — and many years, at least 200 spots deep — there are also 45 daily port prizes valued at more than $100 each at all five weigh-in sites in Algoma, Baileys Harbor, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island. Tickets and K/D merchandise is available at Kap’s Marina, 57 Depot, Hol-N-One Mobil, GreyStone Castle, Algoma BP, the Kewaunee Marina and Lakeshore Lighthouse.
