it can be as easy as "...because thats what is in my boat and i have never had any issues." or "i hate my pos [insert brand of motor] i/o cause it has been a headache since..."
thanx!!

I voted other. You need an outboard for early and late season fishing. Unless you're going to become a multiple boat owner. ;D

I have a 4.3 mercruiser and personally love it. The main reason is the depth of the boat in back and the doghouse to put tackle in and sit on when bringing in fish. Only drawbacks are can't run below freezing and the winterizing takes longer.

I'll second what Trout said other then waiting 2 weeks for a new gimbal bearing . Its been a trouble free motor so far. I'm 99 percent sure my next one will be a Honda for the early late fishing.

Yanmar diesel with a trolling valve and you have any speed and great control in any condition.

Oldsaltbill is on the right page, Can't wait to junk my 6.2 and get that new Yanmar power head in my boat. They just came out with a unit to fit boats like mine.

Only problem part I ever had on my omc cobra was the trim sending unit. Hard to find but easy to repair if you can't find one.

I think a lot has to do with how it was maintained and cared for... The Salmon Assassin is 1988 and the engine looked and sounded a lot better than some younger boats I looked at. I picked Mercruiser because it's a common engine which means more parts are available more people can work on them if needed (hopefully not, knock on wood). (also picked because Chris babied that thing).

I like my Mercuiser and Alpha drive because I am so familiar with it. Let’s see…. I did the following: 1st motor, fuel pump, water circulation pump, exhaust risers, manifolds and tips, distributer, oil pressure and water temp sending units, starter spring, engine timing shift assembly. Bent a push rod and yanked the whole engine and replaced it with a factory rebuilt compete engine. I have about 3 inches of space around the engine so needless to say it is very interesting to work on it. 2nd motor, alternator, ignition sensor module, complete starter, freeze plug (motor did not freeze), exhaust manifold gaskets, thermostat housing rebuild, check valves and springs, new belts and hoses. 1st Alpha one, 1.5 geared. Shift cable replacement; new trim position senders, new seals, impellers once or twice a year, bellows. Blew it up and bought a 3.1 geared Alpha one, new Prop (changed gearing so could not spin the old prop), new shift shaft seal, water pump housing, wear plate, exhaust block off plate, many impellers and gasket sets. Other than that I would say that I/O packages are basically trouble free.
