I took my first trip of the year on the new boat this morning. I still need to add a few more rod holders & possible boards but it was good to get out there!
I didn't get up as early as I wanted to and didn't end up getting on the water until almost 5:00. I was setting up in about 110' of water when I realized I'd forgotten to bring the cooler! Rather than go back for it I just decided to figure out what to do with the fish once I caught something. Since it was my first trip I really wanted to see how everything was working, try out the new locater & see if I needed to move anything so actually catching fish on this trip wasn't a top priority.
I was setting the first rigger with a lighted j-plug and didn't even have it all the way down to the desired depth when it fired but unfortunately it was a very short run and the line went limp in the water. Reeled it in to find empty hooks. Twas quite slow after that and I trolled till about 8:00 when I decided to head in. Just about then the other rigger fired & I was reeling in a dinky coho (think baitfish size) I got him up to the boat, reached for the net & suprise suprise it wasn't there. No time to worry about it then so I just reached for the fish when he thrashed & got off and the spoon sprung back at me & smacked me right in the face. I think if I hadn't been wearing sunglasses I would've gotten a hook in the eye.
Since everything seemed to work ok, the new locater performed well, I had a few hits & the boat isn't sitting at the bottom of the lake & think I can call it a successful trip. Next time I just have to remember to bring the cooler & net along!
