Does everyone use a different rod and reel for each leadcore setup (1,2,3,4,5,6 colors etc)?
I wondered if anyone else puts monofilament splices in strategic places so you can use a longer core set up as a shorter one in a given situation.
The reason why I started doing this was because I tried to use a 10 color as a 5 by clipping the board to the leadcore after 5 colors were out but found right away that the rod tip bouncing and rubbing on the leadcore broke it within an hour. I put a short splice of Mono after 5 colors and then put another splice so I would have monofilament at the rod tip when the board is out.
Just wondering what everyone else does.

I myself and I think you will find the majority of the rest of the poeple on this board use a different rod\reel for each setup. I currently have a 3,5,and 10 color with a 7 color on the way. Kinda feel at this time that those are four good colors to start with before exploring any others.
With the help of others on this board I went with Okuma Convectors 30's with 50lb power pro backing for my 3 and 5 colors and Okuma Convector 45's with 50lb power pro for my 7 and 10 colors....

I have a 2, 3 and 10. I can use the 10 as a 5 by doing what I did. So far it has worked.
I have 9 total rods and reels. 1 wire, 1 power pro, 4 monofilament and 3 with leadcore.
I live in West Central Wisconsin and I only get over to Lake Michigan around 3 times a year. I have a hard time justifying spending too much on equipment that I only use a few times a year. I like many others try to add something each year.
I appreciate people sharing info on these boards. It helps me choose where, when and how to give me the best odds of catching some fish when I go.
I posted a few reports last year after my trips and I plan to again after I go this year.

Three biggest determining factors in what you will carry in the way of various numbers of colored leadcore rigs:
1) Your budget
2) Your rod storage capacity on the boat
3) Your wife's ability to notice the difference in your rod collection
;D
Dan did a nice job by starting with four lead core rigs (3, 5, 7 and 10 colors)........
With the help of guys like Mojo, Reid and others, I now have a 1 and 2 color SWR, and many lead core board line rigs (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 colors) --- I luckily have lots of rod storage inside the boat salon....

I totally understand... When I started a couple years ago I had six rods and just made do with them. Over the last couple of years I've just added a rod here or there when I could. This past year I've been working on getting my leadcore selections figured out and I can already see that copper is probably going to be the next task over the winter. I do have the privlidge of living a mile away from the lake so fishing gets my attention over the summer months.... So ya I guess in your situation I can totally understand...

When you been doing this as long as some guys like MOJO you seem to accumulate a lot of STUFF which allows you to have that many set ups. I started with the bargain basement deals and kept the old stuff when I upgraded which allows me to have too many set ups. 1>2>2>2>3>3>4>5>5>6>6>7>8>10>12. For the pros some of these reels are not the best for cores but . I have more reels then rods.

I too live in Central WI and the value of this board in setting my rods up before the trip over is huge. Thank you guys! Leadcore is cheaper than rods and reels. I have 4 board rods. I run 30lb Power Pro off of them. My leadcore lengths I keep stored in large zip lock bags. 2 thru 5 color and 6 thru 10 colors. All of my lead sections have Spro 35lb Size 10 (I believe) small swivels tied on both ends. These swivels go thru the eye rods and the levelwind. I run a 20 foot mono leader to a swivel and then 6 ft of florocarbon to my baits. When I want to change lead color lenghts I just cut the mono/floro leader off, roll the lead color onto an empty spool, retie up the new lenghth of core and reattach the leader material. Works for me rather than having 2 or 3 more leadcore setups!
Tight lines this weekend everyone. Can't wait for Sunday. SLAMMIN SALMON

Slamin Salmon . . . . you have more patience than me That is a good idea if you want to minimize the number of rod/reel combos you have. I'm not as well equipped as some guys but I do have 1,2,,3,4,5,6,7,8 an 10 color set-ups as well as a 2 and 3 color with mono backing for SWR's. Good luck! It's really a sickness

Thats a good idea slammin salmon if you have a limited rod and reels. Just keep your eyes open on ebay, craigslist, rummage sales ect for some great deals on rod and reels
