I have a 50hp Merc Bigfoot (4 stroke), I fish 2-3 times a week for about 4-5 hours per trip, Are there any special precautions I should be taking because of the amount of low speed hours put on the motor?
The motor has shown no trouble yet but I dont want to get to that point.

Just make sure you do a few laps at WOT in the harbor before you ramp it...
kidding...JUST KIDDING...4 strokers will run all day long on low idle from my experience.

I would still be sure, like BFG said, to run it hard for a minute before shutting it down for the day. Never hurts to burn them a little on the way in.

Although newer engines, particulary 4 stroke, run much cleaner than older two stroke engines, spark plug fouling may still occur. Running under high loads for a period of time helps clean the spark plugs. I would also carry an extra set of plugs and a spark plug wrench as cheep insurance. Evidence of a fouled plug can be as obvious as misfire and low power or as discreet as gasoline in the oil. The later comprimises the oil's lubrication properties and is very bad.
Non-thermostatically controlled engines may experience oil temperatures that are too low to burn off combustion gas blow by in the crankcase, especially when outside temperatures are cold. Evidence of water in the oil is a milky appearance of the oil itself or milky-lotion build up on the inside of the dipstick cap or fill location. The moisture is vaporized and processed by the engine when oil temperatures are sufficient.
I am not familiar with the Mercury set up so these comments are to be considered general guidelines.
