Here's the scenario An 8 mile run from the harbor to your fishing grounds, 6 hours of trolling, and an 8 mile run back to the harbor... How many gallons of fuel do you burn? (include what size boat and what motors you have)
Second question: How high are gas prices going to go this summer? I guess I won't be surprised if marina fuel hits $6

That's about 6-7 gallons for the HitnRun. 18' 1974 Starcraft, 115 Main, 15 kicker.

The new owner of CLAM II (now named Chillaxin') is going to find out (lol)......
It it going to be interesting to see the gas bill when we fuel up in Sheboygan, troll toward Manty and then fuel up again for the trek across to Ludington........my guess is that my calculator may not have enough digits....glad I get to drive it all that way on his dime!
The goal for 2012 is to be into a 18-20 foot aluminum or a 22-24 foot fiberglass walkaround that has a four stroke main (Mercury Optimax would be my first choice) and a 9.9 or 15 Big Foot XL kicker.......
That way if the decent fishing is confined to the reef at end of year I wont be draining the bank account refueling.......I am really going to try to keep it to $30-40 max per trip on such days.....
The main thing to remember when considering the rising fuel costs is to find that sweet spot cruising speed on your engine(s) for maximum fuel efficiency while powering to your fishing grounds.......Full throttle (while fun) eats gas big time ----- the answer may be found in getting an even earlier start to your fishing trips in the morning so that you can account for the extra time powering out.......
That and dont be afraid to ask for a few dollars from your boat whores this year (lol)......

About 9 gal (20ft Pursuit 150hp/8hp) I think I burn more running than trolling. Gas at the Sheboygan Marina was usuallly .75 to $1 more than whatever pump price was and I don't see that changing too much.

Fishing ><> entertainment ><> plus meat to feed the hungry. So if you take the fact that you put food on the table you need to take some fuel cost of the top. Golfing ><> entertainment ><> Cost for round/cart/fuel there and back. If I avoid the WOT at the gap, 6 gallons. At predicted fuel prices that equals 2 less beers at Mercers on Wed. combo rib night. Takes me more fuel to get to the lake then the boat uses for fishing.

One thing I did since I bought the new boat is put away $100 every month for fuel so it won't hurt so bad in summer. After seeing the $3.49 pump price I am glad I chose kicker over auto pilot! I am guessing on 7-8 gallons per trip when I don't fish in the 300 FOW range.

Fishing 300+ fow will be tough.
I also spend more trailering than fishing. I'm thinking 6 gallons on the tow from GB to Algoma and back and about 5 on the water. I fish an 18 ft Starcraft 115 main and a 6 for a kicker.
Guess I didn't match the scenario. I figure a run to 80 fow (~4 miles) troll 4 hours and run back from 80 fow.

Let's see: $1.25 to plug the meter $2.00 for donuts $11.00 for a 12 pack of LaBatts and $ for the privilage of fishing on The Red Boat. = Priceless PS: I also have to get up and get The Red Boat ready to fish in the morning for The Guys Weekend Out. Relay Relay

With my 4 cylinder diesel, the fuel gauge probably wouldn't move enough to see a difference. But, it will take me 35-40 minutes to travel the 8 miles. Last year calculations showed just under 3/4 gallons per hour. That was gallons used divided by total hours on the lake. Didn't break it down between powering out and trolling.

I agree!! But in answer to your question, about 5-6 gallons in my 21' Ranger with 250 4-stroke and T-8 kicker or about 15 gallons in my 25' Trophy with 5.8 Litre I/O and no kicker. The trip from home to Algoma takes about 10 gallons of DIESEL with either boat, which costs way more than gas.

Sorry to burst all of your bubbles….but for us westerners (South Dakota) we don’t even figure boat gas into the equation for a trip to the pond. Towing a 22 ft Boulton seven hours one way equals more Diesel than I want to think about. A good friend once told me that if I have to worry about the cost of gas I should not own a truck or boat. I would be counting your blessings if you lived within an hour of the lake!
Last year I spent 22 days on the Great Lakes and loved every minute of it!! You guys that live in WI are so lucky!

I run a 150 Merc EFI 2 stroke and have a Garmin fuel sensor.I usually run at 3500-4000 rpm and the overall consumption including trolling for hours on a 9.9 4 stroke works out to be usually 2.0 miles per gallon. Some of the newer outboards will maybe touch into the high 2's to 3.5 mpg.My 150 is a 1996 vintage and was rebuilt several years ago due to toooooo many hours of use.On Erie we run out 17 miles one way and troll all day and run back and again works out to be about 2 miles per gallon.

Baby on the way + high gas prices = good year to be picky about when to make fishing trips... Not sure how much Reel Melodi really burns on full power but overall she's pretty good on fuel... Clam? Might consider more trips in the little boat this year where we only have to trailer 1 mile to get to the lake, 90hp outboard, and less boat traffic to run away from.... Dan
