Am I the only one that is compulsive about changing fly leaders every year. I keep them in a dark cool space so they should be good provided that they were not used alot last season.... What do you think?
Is my obsessive compulsiveness on this issue unwarranted or am I just a true salmon addict.....

I usually don't change them just because they were sitting around. After every fish I catch I make sure to check the leader and replace if needed be. Those salmon have sharp teeth and one little knick in the leader could mean a lost fish next time.

Luke, Last night I tied up a big bunch of leaders for my flies. I keep them in my cuddy so I can quickly replace them if I have any issues on the water. To me, it's much easier to replace the leader and retie it when I'm not fishing. I also replace them each season (at a minimum). Thanks to some guidance from the salmon master (Mojo), I'm all set-up on tying my own tourney ties now Owner hooks is all I will use from this day forward. I've found paying attention to detail is the difference between 5 or 6 fish and a limit.

I might be asking a dumb question--when you tie extra leaders, do you have the hook tied on also so that you just have to slip on the beads & skirt and tie the leader end?

I might be asking a dumb question--when you tie extra leaders, do you have the hook tied on also so that you just have to slip on the beads & skirt and tie the leader end? I also have a box full of leaders ready to rumble. I tie double singles and tournament ties (single high, treble low). I vary the bead colors and have the leaders pretty long. All that is needed is to slide the fly on, measure the length you want, and overhand tie your loop knot. This method is quick for replacing flies or for varying leader lengths due to hot tips or hunches. I probably have 30 extra rigs tied up and ready to use.

Ditto to what Mojo said.
I put 2 beads between my upper and lower hook and then use 2 or 3 beads (I color match the fly) as the 'body'.
The 3 beads are packaged with my flies so all I have to do is slide on the beads and fly body before setting my length by overhand knotting as Mojo refers to above.
I actually am planning to have 4 or 5 of the 'hot' colors ready at varying length hanging in my cuddy. I plan to have 22, 23 and 24" versions at my disposal for quick switching with the 'custom' length ones my back-up if I want to do something different.

I too have tied my own flies for two years now. I like that you can make any color you want. I do need to learn how to tie the single hook above. Mojo or Mike will have to give me a lesson Last year my half glow and half crinkle green was a great producer. Very great on a dipsy with a trash can flasher but I seem to have alot of misses that is why I wnat too try the extra single hook

As others have said I as well went to a tournament tie on all my rigs, very seldom do I lose fish with this rig. I have maybe 50 ready to go at the beginning of the season.

I don't have a cuddy ::)so I retie on the fly as storage is at a premium. Double single is the preferred retie and only takes seconds. Reel Fun, half a beer six sets.
