I took my sister and her 2 boys out perch fishing Sunday and the day was saved by sheephead, or at least half of the day. A couple hours into the day the perch bite slowed up and the younger of the two boys, 9 years old, started getting bored and restless. I was just about to call it a day when I caught a little sheephead, then another, and another... Then I saw all the seagulls hanging around hoping for a free meal, so I showed the little guy how to whack a sheephead and feed it to the gulls and he was good to go until the perch decided to cooperate again in an hour or so. I've never seen a kid have so much fun fishing while not fishing. Once the perch started up again he picked up his rod and told the gulls that they weren't getting anymore. He even proclaimed himself "The sheephead killing king" ;D We ended up staying out until dark and he still didn't want to go in.

I agree, sheepshead can really save they day when you're fishing with children. Sheepshead put up a good little battle for kids on ultralight tackle. We did the same thing this summer with the kids- whacking sheepshead and feeding them to the gulls and pelicans.
