Took the grandsons out on Saturday. Sam got a 8 pound salmon and Ryan got a 5 pounder, just S of Algoma in 80 FOW. Pearl Yeck on a 10 color, and chrome/green E-chip/aqua fly on 150' dipsy. Went solo on Sunday, not a touch. Marked fish but they had lockjaw and cataracts. 73 degree surface water, and no thermocline, got gradually cooler as I dropped the ball near the bottom.

Easy way to avoid 54 construction. Keep going N on 57 about 2 miles, go E on Hwy K. Goes straight to Rio Creek.

Kinn's Katch II, Obsession, Obsession II, and Big Daddy were totaled. Also private boat "Lucky Strike" a Baha Crusiers 277 was totaled. Tuna, a former Kinn's captain, was the hero. He rolled though the marina, saw smoke, woke the mates that were sleeping on the boats, called 911, and they moved other boats out of the blaze.

I'm going to see if we can have one in Algoma. I'll bet most Algoma boats have a couple of fist-fulls of expired flares, some 10-15 years old.

We fished Saturday evening and Sunday morning out of Algoma. Pearl Yeck with flat black back on 10 color, using Walleye board to get it off to the side, was the hot bait. Best fish was a 19 pound King at sunset. 5 Steelheads, largest was 9 pounds. Pearl Yeck, flamethrower, blue & silver Pro King, Cactus Spoon (green blank, Raspberry prism tape, silver back) were the winners. Everything on leadcore or wieghted mono on boards. Downriggers and dipseys were dead.

One of the ships that we see on Lake Michigan quite often, the Roger Blough from the US Steel/Key Lakes fleet is aground in Whitefish bay at Gros Cap lighthouse. Story and photos are on the News Channel tab of www.boatnerd.com/ Two ballast tanks were holed and they will be unloading into 2 other fleetmates to lighten the load. No pollution problems, but lots of headaches.

I went 4 for 6 fishing solo. Best rod was a 10 color with a standard size pearl Yek. Steelhead, coho and small king. Went straight east of Algoma, started in 180, trolled out to 300 and back to 200. Rough water on Sat. flat on Sunday. Off to a good start. Boats came in to Captain K's with lots of fish.

Lake Michigan anglers can now share fish finder images with USGS scientists. Dr. David Warner (dmwarner@usgs.gov) is accepting e-mailed images of bait balls along with the following info:
Date Time Location Depth Latitude/Longitude Are anglers seeing bait where biologists are not?
Maybe we can give them a better idea of what's happening in the lake than just a couple of sample trawls.

Browns are hitting. Start shallow with small shallow crankbaits right off the beach 20-40' behind yellowbirds. Any color of chartruse, orange, gold or original black & silver Rapala, Thunderstick or Bomber Long A. The whole shoreline is good. Out of Algoma, most guys go from entry to Claybanks to the north or wayside to the south. Watch the weather! Small boats and big waves don't work! At least a VHF handheld & GPS- It gets foggy with no warning, cell phone with Sturgeon Bay CG and Kewaunee Co SD programed in. Punch in a waypoint for the Algoma and Kewaunee entry. Life Jackets & Flares!

The current feed is the marina parking lot security cam. The old camera was removed. At least now we see more than just "the tree".
