Hi all,
I have never been on Superior salmon fishing. I have fished Lake Michigan out of Bailey's Harbor and Sturgeon Bay. My boat is 21' I have three downriggers and two dipsy rods or leadcore. I want to try Superior since I live just west of Mpls. It's much closer. I would appreciate as much advice as possible. How late in the season is fishing feasible? What should I fish with? Also, where is a good point to put in? Thanks.

I guess the first thing is not to have the same expectations as you have down there. Primary fish is lake trout. I have always found salmon to be somewhat of a bonus catch. Jims flashback spoons, williams warblers and don't be afraid to run stickbaits off boards. Figure at least for me that superior is more of a stickbait and spoon program. Clown type colors have always been a goto for the stickbaits. Just remeber the forage base is smelt, shiners, herring etc. No alewives in superior. Hope you have some more responses!! Good Luck!!

I have fished Superior a number of times and found it to be real hit and miss. McQuoids is an easy access and close to Duluth, I have also fished outta Knife river. I think as the month press's on the humpy's will be hitting futher north. Don't forget a warm coat. good luck be safe and have fun. Rossco

Temp breaks are really important fishing the gitch, watch whats going on and move when you are not catching fish. work all the water column for cohos and kings and trout. always pay attention to the wind the lake is unforgiving and gives very short notice sometimes. I run riggers with spoons and flasher fly combos but on lead and boards run stick baits Good luck and go gettem

Thanks everyone. I might be able to get up there in two or three weeks. It'll be fun trying if the weather permits. Wind will be my determining factor. Thanks for the information. Anything else is greatly appreciated.

Don't expect anything like Lake Michigan other than it's full of water. The Gitch is a total different ball game although I've had fun with it. Please let us know how you do. Rossco

Check with the guys at Marine General in Duluth. They will have the latest info, and carry everything. Rapala, Bombers long A, Thundersticks, and Rebel fastracks work well up there. Flasher/fly can be a waste of time.
