Today we headed out to Algoma. We planned to fish bankers hours out deep for rainbows. The winds were flat all the way to the lake but in Algoma the wind was out of the east and blowing not what we had hopped for. We pounded out for an hour and set up in 450. With three rods in the wire dipsey out 120 with a green/ chrome FF went off it was a nice 2 yr old king, we reset that rod and within minutes it was jamming again, this time a nice bow came to the net, we reset that rod and continued to set rods up. Just as the last rod was going in the wire dipsey went off again and we brought that fish to the boat it was another bow. 3-3 as we got set up was a great start. We had a nice line of waypoints to work on so we started a turn to go back out. From 9:30 till 1 pm we stayed busy bringing fish in and resetting lines. The braid dipsey out 180 with a FF lost a nice king that got out 350’ before it pulled off, we then took a bow on a 10 color with a green flounder pounder spoon, the braid dipsey out 180 the took a bow, after that the wire dipsey out 140 took a bow on a green FF, the same rig went off again and took another bow, the rigger at 65 with blue meat rig then took a bow, we then took a bow on the 10 color flounder pounder, the 65 ft rigger took another bite and produced a nice rainbow. At this point we were 10-11 and had a nice cooler of fish. The afternoon bite would slow down for us but we continued to work an area between 450 and 525. The 300 weighted steel took a bow with a watermelon spoon, An orange stinger spoon took a bite but fell off, the Swr then took a nice bow with a blue/green spoon, the 200 weighted steel had a shaker bow dragging, we then released a shaker king off the braid dipsey and our last bite came on the Swr but came off when water fleas were being cleaned off of the line. We ended 13-16 with an nice box of fish. We started at 8:45 and quit at 5pm. The lake laid down nicely in the afternoon and it was a very enjoyable trip.

It’s amazing what I can remember when I take notes. It helps greatly and yes graybeard is the master of detailed reports.

So we set out for Algoma today. We were greeted with large rollers out of the north and a good chop from the north west. We powered out to 100 and found 70 degree water to the bottom. In 115 there was 50 degree water in the bottom. We kept going and found 48 degree water down 90 in 200 ft, we kept going and found 48 degree water down 60 in 275ft so we set up and started trolling east. With 4 rods in the 200 CU with a green flounder pounder went off and started screaming and then came off, may have been a king. We continued to set lines and ran FF’s on 4 dipseys and 1 rigger, glow spoons were out on the 200,300 6 color and 10 color. We trolled for awhile without another bite, after the sun came up the 200 cu went off again and we netted a rainbow, we then found a rainbow shaker dragging on the 6 color with a cracked ice spoon. We pulled some FF’s and added 2 meat rigs. We trolled along for awhile longer until a chrome/blue meat rig fired on the rigger down 50. It was a large rainbow that came up to the surface and swam into the 300 copper, we were able to land it and then untangle a small mess. We trolled on in a bit of a lull until we hit 450 there a 57 special spoon on the 6 color took a bow, shortly after that we lost a nice jumping bow on the 200 CU green flounder pounder, a little while later the ten color took a bow with a watermelon spoon, after making a turn and coming through our waypoints the 5 color took off with a orange stinger spoon. That bow made it all the way to the back of the boat 6ft out of net range, tail kicked and swam away. After that the 57 Chevy spoon on the 6 color took a swing and a miss, our last hookup was on a mag pro king on the 250 CU. We ended the day 6-10.

Fished Yesterday south of town, started in 60 had a nice king in 75 on a 10” spin dr white blade two face with a UV Fly behind it. Trolled out to 110 then back in and out without another hit. Kept going east took a nice coho in 200 on a wire diver out 140 with green and chrome FF, found a pack of fish in 300 and took a few hits there, after that died we continued east out to 350 till we pulled lines taking bites here and there. We ended up 4-7 with three kings and a coho, the fish were good size except 1 mag shaker king. White blade two face spin dr with ff in 10” on the rigger UV fly behind it, took two hits, 10 color took two hits with a chrome dragon slayer. All other bites came on green and chrome flashers except 1 meat bite on blue chrome 10” spin dr. We ran glow spoons in the morning, and put out our best rainbow/cohos spoons on the way out but never took a spoon bite. GPS speed was 2.1-2.5 water temp on the surface was 67/68 from 40-160 after that it warmed up to 71.

Fished Kewaunee Friday pm and Saturday am till 12pm. On Friday night set lines at 4:30 after getting through the fog at 5:30 we took a 16 lb king on a pro king flasher aqua fly out 110 on a braid diver in 280 fow, at 6:30 our second bite was a steelhead out 70 on a wire diver proking flasher aqua fly in 350, that fish came off right behind the boat and laid on the surface as we drove away, frustrating, the next rod to go at 7:50 was the deep rigger down 100 in 280 fow with a diabolical meat rig, that was a mature king that made it to the back of the boat and threw the hook shortly after it seen the boat, five minutes later a 10 lb king took clear blade opti flasher and aqua fly on a ten color. We finished the night 2-4 fished till 9:30. Had anyone else noticed the lack of a night bite. It seems my hits stop after 8 pm and there has been no action as the sun hits the trees. Saturday morning fished the same water took a 14 lb king at 5:30 am on 6 color wondrrbread spoon, lost a rainbow at 10 am on a mixed veggie spoon on a 120 copper. Ended at 12 pm 1-2 hopefully fishing improves. Good luck Everyone.

Took a Friday evening trip to Kewaunee on Friday afternoon. Set lines in 110 and trolled out to 275 then back into 80 before we called it a night. Ended up 3-4 all kings. We took two hits on meat down 100 on the deep rigger. One hit on wire dipsey out 70, and one hit on braid dipsey out 110. Green was good on chrome FF, the one we lost on the rigger came up to the top went around the braid dipsey then took400 ft of line out, held down for a bit then came off. It was a fun evening fish boated were 23,16, and 13 lbs. Had to wear knee boots to land the boat and only got one foot wet (hole by the landing)!

Great catch, the fly lead seems like bad luck. I’ve FF that are well over 10 years old, previously run by a charter captain. I had a bad spool of Berkley vanish, two seasons ago that caused two lost fish, before I threw it away. I guess a guy has to give them a pull test each time out.

Headed down to port yesterday started setting lines at 4:15 in 80 ft, st 4:45 we doubled up as the wire and braid dipsey took off, while fighting those fish a laker hit the down rigger and swam into the wire dipsey, we lost the laker but landed a 16 and 10 lb king. We Kept working 90-120ft and had two other drive by’s, at 7:15 the wire took off again and we landed a 19 lb king. We spent the next three hours trolling the same water in hopes of more kings but came up empty. We turned out and at 140 doubled on rainbows after landing those two fish we started turning to get back in as we were in 175. On our way back we tripled in 150 and took two more hits as we fought those fish, we landed those three after a large tangle that made my 150 copper into a 100. We worked our marks but never got back into the school. We ended the day 10-18 with many other drive by’s. outside of 160 the water got cold fast down to 48 on the surface, our hits came in 50-53 degree water. Green and chrome on the flasher fits stood out, silver and blue stood out on the spoons for rainbows. The size of the rainbows was nice with the biggest being 14.5 lbs. copiers were more active than the lead core 70,100,150, all took bites 3 and 5 colors as well. 1.9-2.3 sog was best.

We decided to run a later start this morning getting out of the harbor around 8 am. We went out to 40 ft straight out in front and set up trolling east. We marked some nice fish in close, had some follow the riggers but couldn't get bit. Continued east until we got bit in 160, then ran a south and north troll the rest of the day. There is a good current out of the north. 00 orange dodger on 70 copper, dipsey 2.5 out 35ft, 1/2 oz wt back 35, and 3 color all took bites. We also had a happee meal spoon working 25 down on a rigger, watermelon spoon on a 30 copper, and agent orange worked on a 2 color. We did run a FF on a dipsey and one rigger but no king bites. All coho, but we did loose two big rainbows as well. Ended up 15/25 and done by 12:30. Water temp was 44-46 the fish were full of alewives.

GB is correct longer and deeper on the inside. I like my boards to release as well, they fall back and to the middle much better that way, but that's a personal preference. Good luck
