I was excited to finally get back on the big pond having been away since August dealing with 2 new engines. They performed as they should and that was a relief.
Launched at Racine and made two long passes in front of the Root River and only two bites and one in the box. Marked quite a few fish and some bait but decided to pull and run about 3 miles south because a friend had action there a few days before. Setting up in 25 feet of water and seeing 2 other boats thought it was going to be a good move. Just a few lines in when the phone rang and friend said he had done very well north of Wind Point in shallow and he had talked to one of the boats near me and only one fish. Pulled again and made the 7 mile run. Needed some time on the engine anyway.
We boated 3 by the time we got all the lines reset. We worked 18 to 30 feet of water finding 46° on the surface and 44 down 12 feet. Marked quite a few balls of bait plastered to the bottom with hooks from time to time. We just kept pecking away at them but action slowed a bit when the winds switched to the Southeast. Ended up with 12 for 15 all Browns. That made my buddies happy who we're both looking forward to smoking them. Upcoming weather forecast looks like the fish will be safe for a while. Maybe more Coho will be around by then. Great start to the season with seasoned old friends.
