Friend of mine was quizzed by the boys in gray after weekend outing. Asked what charter he was on, when it was a fun run on a private boat. Looks like the WI DNR is trying to find unlicensed charters in the Algoma area. 2 man surveillance team in a non-DNR truck.

That is interesting, I was working on the boat a few weeks ago and an older gentle stops by and asks if I would charter a group. I told him that I don't charter and he seemed like he didn't believe me. Kept asking questions. I finally walked him to the lounge and pointed to the rack of business cards for charters and told him to take his pick. Didn't think anything of it until now. This was in Kewaunee

Wouldn't that be the job of the coast guard, not the wdnr?

DNR would be concerned with guys not having the sport trolling lic... if they found someone without a OUPV they'd get the CG involved too.
I'm glad if they are cracking down....hopefully the offenders are not reading this so they don't know its coming.

There were two guys wearing DNR uniforms in a pick-up in the Algoma Marina parking lot on Sat. morning. There were also a couple fish technicians checking for chips at the cleaning station. They asked if our fish had chips and we had no idea of what we were looking for and they did not seem to be interested in checking our fish. Couple nice salmon on 7 color bloody nose RV, smaller salmon on 5 color Shelly Snack, nice lake trout on chrome/green FF down 63' on rigger and bow on 3 color with hot lips RV. All action early Sat. morning in 90-110 fow south of Algoma. Marked a lot of deep fish that seemed to come up to the deep riggers but no takers. Left early before the storm was kicking up the waves a bit. Good maiden voyage, beautiful cruising.

Anchorman has it right, with the state of our fishery they are worried about (rightfully so) about guys chartering without proper licensing and taking in cash (not paying proper taxes and insurance) and also not reporting their catch on the mandatory sport trolling reports. It doesn't bother me one bit, glad to see some action being done about this. They are keeping a close eye on Algoma because there was a very high percentage of Wisconsin fish taken there last year and they are trying to keep better tabs on what numbers are actually being take

"They are keeping a close eye on Algoma because there was a very high percentage of Wisconsin fish taken there last year" Except when the entire Kinns fleet was on the bank reef. Hell, even a few Kewaunee charters made the trip.

I sure wasn't much of a threat to the Algoma fish last year.

Hopefully there isn't confusion with guys like me that fish with different guys each trip. That said, if there is illegal chartering, I hope they catch the violators.

This brings up the obvious Question: Exactly what is illegal chartering. Does anyone have a link to information as I've heard a lot of opinions over the years. If a friend offers me a beer while on my boat am I chartering? If two buddies each give me $20 for gas is that illegal chartering? If fishing partner pays for breakfast after fishing with me that morning, is that illegal?
I'd sure like to see a copy of the official rules on what constitutes illegal chartering?
I sure don't consider it chartering when I take a couple friends fishing for the morning but It would be nice to know the DNR & Coast Guard thoughts.

I don't think you fish here enough to be making that kind of assumption. I'll go where the fish are. Period. If you had a run in with a Kinns boat, I'm sure it was incidental and not intentional. I see your boat MAYBE 3 times a year at the dock.

It's funny to read someone in a transient slip calling full time fishermen 'wanna be's'
