Plan on trying some night fishing out of Algoma during the next full moon period. Never have tried it so any advice would be appreciated.
What time to start?
Run all moonshines or non glow baits also?
Fish w/ boards or just riggers & dipseys?
Thanks guys

Hey Rick I posted this a couple yrs ago,it would take me an hour to type it,we had just got back from fishing port washington Somethings I would add is if a certain kind of spoon is getting hit put out another one on the other side and it will get hit,the moonshine rv spoons have been working well this year in the dark, weve caught more kings during the night than in the light,if its calm out youll see all the bait come up to the surface,we keep all ower lines in the top 20ft,if theres a good chop we will fish the top 40 ft the bait will be 15 to 20 feet down.We put oil on all are spoons at night, steve o sells it,BP gas station in town has the best prices and a good selection,if dot spoons are getting hit put all dots out,if latter backs are getting hit ,put out more and so on.Thats all I got.
PM your number rick, ill be out during the moon as well. good luck to every one in the KD.
Here is my two cents worth, er hundres cents worth...
For the most part I use glow spoons and haven't had much success with flashers, flies and plugs although others have. The best for me has been moonshine glow spoons and the moonshine half moon series and rv spoons Before we go out we check the bait size and try to match our spoons to the bait. If the bait is small we will use the half moon series, they are more speed tollerant in compparison to the magnums. Color doesn't seem to make as much difference at night; beging that Salmon can't see color at night.
At night Salmon use cones to see and rods to see at night. On clear and calm evenings Salmon start off with their cones and start switching to rods, 3-5 hours before dark; generaly this takes 4-6 hours for them to switch back to cones in the morning; hence the mid day bite if it is a clear and calm night translating to a bite between 11am - 1pm when their eyes have adjusted.
If it is clear going into the night, their is usually a 30 - 60 minute lul before things pick up. One of the things we considered is the rising and setting of the moon; generally trying to fish in between that time. Down in port we started out at 2.0 at the ball and zig zagged to find the fish. Generally starting at 60 ft of water, continuing to troll until we were hit. In port the magic depth was 75 ft.; 45 ft down with 47 degree water; we attemtped to load up our lures in that temperature and depth. Because the weather conditions had not changed, we continued to fish that circumstance througout the trip. For the most part we find the fish at or just above the thermal cline if it is set or the top half of the water column. What chuck said about double, triples and quads was reall true down their. In that trip we had 2 quads and multiple triples. We will also pull the dipsies in calm water, and this year we started using torpedo divers with long leads; lead balls would do the same.
We were out last Saturday night in Algoma we ended up 9 for 14 before I lost all of my boards and one torpedo diver to driving error. Half moon spoons 35 ft down in 80 ft of water is what was hot. Speed is another important factor, in port we kicked the engine up to 2.5 speed of the ball and then threw the throttle into neutral, between 1.6 & 1.2 the rods would go off. Another thing to consider is not to glow the spoons all of the way; it generally takes 1/2 - 45 minutes before those spoons will get hit. We also stayed a distance from other boats so as not to spook the fish.

Might have to tell him what left click means. Hey Rick, I just returned from Algoma last night, I bought a boat over there. Will be back over next week, maybe we can hook up. If you pm me your phone # I'll call ya when there. I think the boat I purchased is Githcasome, it's a G/L/ Saber. Rossco

I agree with gilligan that it's harder to get bit on a freshly glown spoon. Try to avoid giving your spoons a full charge. I seem to have good luck on purle/purple glow spoons. They don't glow as brightly as green or blue. Purple nurple, logans hero, jj mcmuffin have been very productive for us over the past few years.
I will definatitly use the tip on dots vs. ladderbacks. Makes perfect sense to me.

Walker ... the darker it gets .. the BIGGER the diaper bag needs to be.[/quotyep Yep I'm sure night fishing will be a fiasco as I'm not that good of a boat driver in the light. As a smart man once told me "You ain't gotta be crazy to fish outta Algoma-but it really helps" So Steve-gilligan tells me I need some of your oil. You gonna be around Kewaunee this weekend? You fishing the KD?
