Did the price of flares go up in the past couple of years or am I just losing my memory? (It might be a Steve thing)I just bought a package of 4 handhelds and another of 4 aerials and they cost about $30/pack. The last time I bought them was 3 or 4 years ago and I thought I only paid about half of that.

They seem to have gone way up. Mine expired this year and I was amazed at how much they wanted for 4.

Note on flares...........
By chance, there was a flare shoot last weekend at the yacht club. it was an eye opening experience to say the least!
having never shot my little plastic POS flare gun, I thought it would be a great opportunity. I had 6 flares that expired in 2010. sealed in a waterproof case, in a cabinet, out of the sun and moisture. shot all 6. NONE of them lit up. shot one of the current ones that expire next year......could barely see it for a couple of seconds.
Also, if you get the hand held ones. make sure you hold them over the side of the boat if you ever need to use one. they drip VERY VERY HOT stuff all over the place and could light your boat on fire.
The orange smoke "daytime" flares were awesome in my opinion. worked very well.

The 12 ga arial flares have a six second burn and hand held ones are 3 minutes, the " slag" they drip is not suppose to burn anything or be able to start a fire-- but make sure you hold them overboard , preferably on the down wind side. Be sure to check the dates on flares when you buy them , good for 42 months from date of manufacture ( not purchase) I've already seen them in stores with only 6 mo. Left on them

Last year I had to buy some new shells and I thought that they were about the price of the whole kit I purchased a few years ago.

With the shortage of ammo recently, I'm sure powder, primer, etc. has gone up as well. all in high demand. no sence in keeping the price the same.

I bought 12 gauge flares at fleet farm for $30 then when at Walmart saw they had the same for $22. I was checked at Port pier in 2010 by coast guard trainees and my flares were 2009. The lead guy said they mark it down but wasn't sure if I'd get a ticket, but to check my mail. Two months later I get a letter with a ticket for a little over a thousand dollars. I had to look at the fine a second time, crazy! Directions said if I buy new flares, send in a copy of the receipt and a picture of the flares on the boat, they would re-assess the ticket. So I did and they dropped the ticket. So at that time my boat stickers expired in 2013 so I found flares that expired in 2013. This way the year when my boat registration is due it's a reminder I need new flares and now with my new sticker I bought ones that expired when my registration expires.

Since these 12 gauge are supposed to be waterproof they should last a lifetime and more if they used normal powder and primers. I have a box of old 12 gauge and hand flares, now I'm curious if they'll go off. I have 12 gauge bird loads that were reloaded in the 60's and given to me and they still fire fine. And I have older bought-in-the-box bird loads that are older than that and they fire fine.

I have fired off old flares with mixed results, some work some don't, but I've never tried the 12ga ones. I live a long ways from the lake so maybe we should have a get together, build a campfire, have a few beverages and try out all our old flares. Mine are outdated by a month; I'd like to see if they work. Lots of fireworks going off in the neighborhood so what's wrong with a few more?
