I cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell is going on lately with me landing fish. Went out today on a nice five hour solo trip and managed one laker. As I was attempting to drive/reel/net the swivel snapped and the damn laker ran off with my JJ Mac Muffin. I started the year feeling good I was dialed in to the lakers in April; I had two really good trips in early May but lately I SUCK AT FISHING. I am thinking that I may have to change the name Salmon Assassin.
Today I tried everything from spoons to flies, I ran copper deep, I ran riggers, I ran dipsys, I even ran a board up high. I was charting a lot of bait but getting the fish to bite proved extremely difficult.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would rather reel in an old boot or a tire than a laker

LBL.... There are days like these. First off you launch out of south shore. (my old stomping grounds)....Great memories for me there ...I grew up in St. Francis. As my wife always say's success comes because I don't over think it...after 26 years I've learned she is right. You know your stuff and you have the passion...enjoy your time on the water.

Keep It Stupid Simple
Don't over work. Lakers in April are one of the easiest thing to catch. They STACK UP in that shallower water.....don't base spring fishing with now. After thinking about this, and you Dipseys not producing, what speed have you been trolling? AS a rule, Lakers like it slow, especially in the spring in REAL cold water. What is your trolling speed now, compared to then? IMHO too fast is better that too slow. Run a SWR down 45-70' with one of your Moonshine spoons. Run a Dipsey 35-125' out with a dodger/fly or spoon Run your 10 color off a board with a spoon.

I am done thinking that I know everything about salmon fishing now and I am ready to listen. Here is my plan of action to get back into killing salmon....
1. Get some new lures I went out today and bought a pro king magnum black/gold with ladderback (glow), pro king standard size oil can (w/ glow ladderback), pro king glow double cracked ice, and a moonshine happee meal.
2. start using boards with leadcore. I am in the process of replacing the dracon backing the redicore came with. I am going to add about 50 feet on mono after the frist 5 colors and 100 feet after the second five, so I can use the rig as either as a 5 or 10 color set up.
3. Know when to hold them and when to fold them. Each set up has a 30 minute shelf life after 30 minutes and no hits the lure or presentaion is getting ditched for soemthing else.
4. Run a SWR. I am going to head down to my secret bunker and assemble one after I am done doing surgery on the leadcore.
To answer your question earlier hitandrun I usually troll between 2.1 and 2.3 SOG.

I think REDI-Core comes with tuff line as the backer? I've not seen it with dacron. Is the dacron something you put on .. or maybe you can save some cash and not replace it??

LBL, I was saying the same things you were 5 years ago. I started a post with the title saying "I suck at salmon fishing" ;D The guys on the board told me to hang in there and get more time on the water and things will come around and slowly but surely they have. Down speed, getting used to copper/core, and paying attention to what works and what doesn't on my boat is huge. I am going to tell you what Joe, Brent and Reid (others as well) have told me, hang in there, have fun, and pay attention to what works and repeat. Chris

LBL, I know the Clam trolls normally at 2.5 to 2.6 SOG, but don't be afraid to crank it up to 3.0 occasionally. The rainbows sometimes like it a little faster. If you are running boards do a lot of S-turns to speed up one side of the boat while slowing down the other side. If you get a hit during a turn, take notice on which side it came from (slow or fast side). Just keep changing the speeds until you find something that works daily, as the fish will change daily on the presentation they want it. krash

LBL.....
If you are at all interested, I have an open seat on Saturday morning out of Port that is yours if you want it.......as we discussed on several threads, sometimes it just takes getting on someone else's boat and seeing how they run things and what works and what doesnt to help with your very own spread.....
You can call me or PM me --- we would enjoy the opportunity to assist you with your personal trips on the water! Fishing shouldnt be that frustrating and it sounds like you need to lift your spirits a little.

I had the distinct honor of dining at Relay's house last night for some of the best Rainbow I have ever had.....I made sure I had two ultra cold Labatt Blues in my hand when he greeted me at the door last night (lol)..... Rick served up baked potatoes, salad, and we gobbled up seven rainbow fillets that he prepared using a Cajun seasoning that was nothing short of mouth watering! We ate like kings and I waddled out to my car with the most contented look on my face....... Rick ---- Thanks so much for the food, company and that spare Miller 64 I managed to get down (lol).......absolutely perfect meal! Your pictures of the new house in Florida were terrific to look at, but reminded me that you are only a house sale away from leaving..... Maybe I will put up that Radon Warning sign in front of your house that Reid mentioned......

I use my old Garmin handheld GPS as my main speed indicator. It is about a 1/2 mile an hour slower than my Lowrance GPS and EVERY OTHER GPS I've Compared it to. Normally when I'm taking hits, my Lorance reads any where from 2.9-3.2. Bump that speed up a bit. This will also help you with your short hits on the core, and no hits on the Dipsy....I would think!
